1 And the LORD {YHWH, Covenant Initiator} spoke to Moses in the Wilderness of Sinai, in the Tent of Meeting, on the first day of the second month, in the second year after their exodus {letzetam: departure event} from the land of Egypt, saying:
2 Lift up {se’u: publicly count} the head of all the congregation of the sons of Israel, by their clans, by the house of their fathers, by the number of names, every male, individually by their heads {gulgelot: person by person}.
3 From the age of twenty years and upward, all who go forth to war in Israel are to be mustered {tifkedhu: formal enrollment process} by you and Aaron according to their armies {tsava: organized military group}.
4 And with you, there will be a man {ish: individual representative} from each tribe; each man will be the head {rosh: chief leader} of his ancestral house.
5 And these are the names {shemot: list heading} of the men who will stand with you for Reuben: Elitsur {Elitsur: God my rock} son of Shedeur.
6 For the tribe {shebet: division} of Simeon, Shelumiel son {ben: lineage identifier} of Tsurishaddai.
7 For Judah {yehudah: tribal leader}, Nahshon, son {ben: ancestral lineage} of Amminadab.
8 From Issachar {yissakhar: hired reward}, Nethanel son {son: lineal descendant} of Zuar.
9 For Zebulun {zebulun: tribal allotment}, Eliab the son {ben: generational linkage} of Helon.
10 Of the descendants of Joseph: for Ephraim, Elishama {elishama: registered leader} son of Ammihud; and for Manasseh, Gamliel {gamliel: registered chief} son of Pedahzur.
11 For Benjamin {le-vinyamin: tribal assignment}, Abidan son of Gideoni {ben-gid’oni: family lineage}.
12 For Dan {dan: tribal judge}, Achi'ezer {achiezer: brother’s help} son of Ammishaddai.
13 From the tribe of Asher comes Pagiel {pagiel: tribal leader}, the son of Ochran {ochran: ancestral founder}.
14 For Gad {gad: tribal group}, Elyasaph son {ben: family headship} of Deuel.
15 For Naphtali {Naphtali: wrestling tribe}, Achira {Achira: last-born brother} son of Enan.
16 These are the called ones {keru’ei: those summoned} of the assembly, the leaders of the tribes of their fathers, the heads of the thousands {alfei: clan divisions} of Israel.
17 And Moses and Aaron took these men {ha-anashim: designated representatives} who had been designated by name {be-shemot: specific identification}.
18 And the entire congregation {edah: Assembled Community} assembled on the first day of the second month, and they registered their genealogy by their clans {mishpechot: Extended Families}, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, by their heads.
19 Just as the LORD {YHWH, Command Revealer} commanded Moses, so he counted {paked: assigned by census} them in the wilderness of Sinai.
20 And the sons of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel, their generations {toldot: ancestral records} by their families, by the house of their fathers, by the number of names, by their heads, every male from twenty years old and upward, everyone who goes out to the army {tsava: military service}.
21 Those counted {pekudeihem: mustered individuals} for the tribe of Reuben {Reuben: see a son} numbered 46,500.
22 To the sons of Simeon, their generations {toldotam: family lineages}, by their clans and ancestral houses, their counted ones {pekudav: enrolled individuals}, according to the number of names, by their heads—every male twenty years old and upward—all who go out for the army.
23 The number of the counted ones {pekudeihem: those enrolled} for the tribe of Simeon was 59,300 {elef: thousand unit}.
24 To the sons of Gad, their generations {toledotam: lines of descent}, by their clans, by their ancestral house, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone who goes out to the army {tzava: military force}.
25 The number of those counted {pekudim: registered for military service} from the tribe of Gad {Gad: seventh son of Jacob} was 45,650.
26 To the sons of Judah their genealogies {toldotam: ancestral records} by their families and by their fathers’ house, listed by number of names; from every male twenty years old and upward, all who could go out to war {tsava: military service}.
27 The mustered men {pekudim: counted men} of the tribe of Judah {Yehudah: leadership tribe} numbered 74,600.
28 For the sons of Issachar, their generations {toledot: family lines}, by their clans and by the house of their fathers, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone going out for military service {tsava: military levy}.
29 The enrollments {pekudim: assigned count} for the tribe of Issachar {Yissakar: reward} were fifty-four thousand four hundred.
30 To the sons of Zebulun, their generations{toledotam: genealogical records}, by their clans and ancestral houses, according to the number of names, from every man twenty years old and upward, all who go out to the army{tzava: military host}.
31 The mustered men {pekudim: counted warriors} of the tribe {matteh: clan division} of Zebulun numbered 57,400.
32 Of the sons of Joseph, of the sons of Ephraim, their genealogies {toledot: ancestral records}, by their clans, according to the house of their fathers, by the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, all who go out to the army {tsava: military service}.
33 The total of those numbered {pekudim: enrolled for service} of the tribe of Ephraim was forty thousand five hundred {arbaʿim elef va-chamesh meot: numeric sum}.
34 For the sons of Manasseh, their descendants {toldotam: genealogical records}, listed by their clans and by their ancestral house, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, all who go out to the army {tsava: military service}.
35 The number of those mustered {p'kudeihem: official enrollment count} from the tribe of Manasseh was 32,200 {shenayim u-shloshim elef u-matayim: mixed numeric structure}.
36 For the sons of Benjamin, their genealogical records{toledot: lineage} by their families, by their fathers’ house, according to the number{mispar: official count} of names, from twenty years old and upward, all who go out for warfare.
37 The count of those mustered {pekudeihem: registered men} for the tribe {matteh: tribal division} of Benjamin was 35,400.
38 To the sons of Dan their genealogies{toldotam: recorded lineages}, by their families, by the house of their fathers, by the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, all who go out to war{tsava: military service}.
39 Their counted ones for the tribe of Dan {dan: son of Jacob} were sixty-two thousand seven hundred {meot: groups of one hundred}.
40 For the sons of Asher {Asher: tribal descendant}, by their generations, by their clans, by the house of their fathers, according to the number {mispar: census record} of names, from twenty years old and upward, all who go out to the army.
41 The number of those mustered ones {pekudim: officially enrolled} from the tribe of Asher {Asher: Jacob’s blessed son} was forty-one thousand and five hundred.
42 From the sons of Naphtali their genealogies{toledotam: family registers} were arranged by clans and ancestral houses according to the number of names{shemot: personal listings}, from twenty years old and upward, all who went out to serve in the army.
43 The mustered ones {pequdeihem: those counted for duty} of the tribe of Naphtali were fifty-three thousand four hundred {shlosha vachamishim elef ve'arba meot: Hebrew numeric pattern}.
44 These were the ones who were counted {hapekudim: officially enrolled}, whom Moses and Aaron and the leaders of Israel counted, twelve men—each man {ish ish-echad: individual representative} for the house of his fathers.
45 And all the enrolled {pekudei: those mustered for duty} of the sons of Israel, by the house of their fathers, from twenty years old and upward, all who could go out to war {tsava: military service} in Israel.
46 And all those who were counted {pequdim: enrolled participants} were six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty {chamishshim: tens grouping}.
47 But the Levites {haLeviim: Levitical clan} according to the tribe {matteh: familial division} of their fathers were not enrolled among them.
48 And the LORD {YHWH, Divine Lawgiver} spoke to Moses, saying {leʾemor: introducing direct speech},
49 However, you shall not count the tribe of Levi {Levi: priestly lineage}, and you shall not take up their number {rosham: total headcount} among the sons of Israel.
50 But you shall appoint the Levites {haLevi’yim: priestly clan} over the tabernacle {mishkan: sacred dwelling} of the testimony and over all its vessels and everything that belongs to it. They shall carry the tabernacle and all its vessels, serve it, and encamp around it.
