Exegesis

The causal particle ya‘an {יַ֚עַן | ya‘an} ‘because’ initiates the reason clause, which is negated by lō he’emantēm {לֹא הֶאֱמַנְתֶּם | lō he’emantēm} ‘you trusted’; here, the Hifil perfect conveys an active causative trust.

The consequence clause follows with lāḵēn lō tavī’û {לָכֵן לֹא תָבִיאוּ | lāḵēn lō tavī’û} ‘therefore you will not bring’, applying the prohibition to ha-qāhāl hazzē {הַקָּהָל הַזֶּה | ha-qāhāl hazzē} ‘this assembly’ and defining the scope with the relative clause ʾel-hā’āreṣ ʾăšer nāṯattî lāhem {אֶל־הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר נָתַתִּי לָהֶם | ʾel-hā’āreṣ ʾăšer nāṯattî lāhem} ‘into the land that I have given them’.
