Proverbs 23:5ExegesisTAB

Proverbs 23 : 5 Wealth | Transience | Flight
5. Linguistic Exegesis
The verse begins with the interrogative hiphil imperfect hata'if {הֲתָעִיף | hattāʼîp} ‘cause to fly,’ engaging the reader through the direct object in einekha {עֵינֶיךָ | ʿê·yê·nê·ḵā} ‘your eyes.’ The prepositional suffix in bo {בוֹ | bō} ‘in it’ refers back to the elusive subject of wealth. A verbless resultative clause ve'einennu {וְאֵינֶנּוּ | wə·’ênên·nū} ‘and it is not’ underscores sudden absence. The causal conjunction ki {כִּי | kî} ‘for’ introduces the parallel Qal statements asah {עָשָׂה | ’ā·śāh} ‘it makes’ and ya'aseh-lo {יַעֲשֶׂה־לוֹ | ya·‘ă·śeh·lô} ‘he will make for him,’ creating synonymous intensification with kenafayim {כְנָפַיִם | kᵉ·nā·p̄ā·yim} ‘wings’ and the simile kenesher {כְּנֶשֶׁר | kᵉ·nê·šêr} ‘like an eagle.’ The vav consecutive perfect ve'af {וְעָף | wə·’āp̄} ‘and it flew’ followed by the imperfect ya'uf {יָעוּף | yā·‘uf} ‘it will fly’ employs paronomasia to intensify the motion toward hashamayim {הַשָּׁמַיִם | haš·šā·mayim} ‘the heavens.’
