Exegesis

The object of this seeing is expressed by the accusative construction ek tēs thalassēs thērion anabainon {ἐκ τῆς θαλάσσης θηρίον ἀναβαῖνον | ek tês tha-lás-sēs thē-rí-on a-na-baî-non}, literally “a beast rising out of the sea,” where the present participle anabainon functions attributively yet retains a vivid, progressive force, depicting the beast in the very act of emerging.
