1 And I saw a beast {therion: hostile ruling power} rising out of the sea, having ten horns and seven heads, and upon its horns were ten diadems, and upon its heads were names of blasphemy {blasphēmias: contempt for holy}.
2 And the beast {therion: oppressive ruler} that I saw resembled a leopard, with feet like those of a bear and a mouth like that of a lion; and the dragon {drakon: Satanic power} bestowed on it his power and his throne and vast authority.
3 And one of his heads was as though it had been slain unto death, and the wound of his death was healed, and all the earth marveled {thaumazo: deeply astonished} after the beast {therion: ferocious power}.
4 And they worshiped the dragon {drakon: ancient serpent}, because he gave the authority {exousia: delegated power} to the beast; and they worshiped the beast, saying, “Who is like the beast, and who is able to wage war with him?”
5 And a mouth was given to him, speaking great things and blasphemies {blasphemias: profane speech}; and authority {exousia: delegated rule} was given to him to continue for forty-two months.
6 And he opened his mouth for blasphemies against God {Theos, Profaned Majesty}, to blaspheme His name {onoma: covenant reputation} and His tabernacle, and those who dwell in heaven.
7 And it was given to him to make war {polemos: organized hostile conflict} with the saints and to conquer them, and authority {exousia: right to exercise power} was given to him over every tribe and people and language and nation.
8 And all who dwell on the earth will worship him, everyone whose name has not been written in the book of life of the Lamb {arnion, Slain Redeemer} who has been slain from the foundation of the world {kosmos: created order}.
9 If anyone has an ear {ous: receptive capacity}, let him hear {akousato: respond obediently}.
10 If anyone is to go into captivity {aichmalosia: forced confinement}, into captivity he goes; if anyone is to be killed with the sword, with the sword he must be killed. Here is the endurance {hypomone: steadfastness under pressure} and the faith of the saints.
11 And I saw another beast {therion: deceptive authority} coming up out of the earth, and it had two horns like a lamb, and it was speaking like a dragon {drakon: fierce serpent}.
12 And it exercises all the authority {exousia: delegated control} of the first beast in its presence, and it makes the earth and those who dwell in it worship the first beast, whose deadly wound {plege: violent blow} was healed.
13 And he performs great signs {semeia: miraculous indicators}, so that he even causes fire {pyr: blazing flame} to come down from heaven onto the earth before the people.
14 And it deceives those who dwell on the earth through the signs {semeia: supernatural works} which it was given to perform before the beast {therion: hostile power}, saying to those who dwell on the earth that they should make an image for the beast who has the wound of the sword and lived.
15 And it was given to it to give breath {pneuma: animating breath} to the image of the beast, so that the image of the beast might even speak, and it might cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed {apoktanthōsin: judicial execution}.","
16 And he causes all, the small and the great, and the rich and the poor, and the free and the slaves {doulos: owned laborers}, so that they receive a mark {charagma: stamped sign of allegiance} on their right hand or on their forehead.
17 And so that no one might be able to buy or to sell unless he has the mark, the name of the beast {therion: hostile world power}, or the number {arithmon: numerical identifier} of his name.
18 Here is wisdom {sophia: discerning insight}. Let the one who has understanding calculate the number of the beast {therion: hostile power}, for it is the number of a man, and his number is six hundred and sixty-six.
