Revelation 20:4ExegesisTAB

Revelation 20 : 4 Judgment | Martyrdom | Reign
4. Linguistic Exegesis
The verse begins with the visionary formula kai eidon {Καὶ εἶδον | kaí eî-don} “and I saw,” which introduces a new judicial scene centered on thronous {θρό́νους | thró-nous} “thrones.” The coordinated clause ekathisan epʼ autous {ἐκάθισαν ἐπʼ αὐτούς | eká-thi-san epí au-toús} “they sat upon them” specifies the appointed judges as the implicit subject. The passive edothe autois {ἐδόθη αὐτοῖς | edó-thē au-toîs} “judgment was given to them” underscores divine bestowal of authority. The next clause kai tas psychas tôn pepelekismenōn {καὶ τὰς ψυχὰς τῶν πεπελεκισμένων | kaí tàs psy-chàs tôn pe-pe-le-ki-sme-nôn} “and the souls of those who had been beheaded” identifies the martyrs, with dia tēn martyrían Iēsoû {διὰ τὴν μαρτυρίαν Ἰησοῦ | diá tēn mar-tu-rí-an Iē-soû} and dia ton lógon toû theou {διὰ τὸν λόγον τοῦ θεοῦ | diá ton ló-gon toû the-oû} functioning as causal prepositional phrases linking their death to witness and fidelity. The relative hoítines ou prosekýnēsan tò thēríon {οἵτινες οὐ προσεκύνησαν τὸ θηρίον | hoí-ti-nes ou pro-se-ký-ne-san tò thē-rí-on}, oudè tēn eikóna autoû {οὐδὲ τὴν εἰκόνα αὐτοῦ | ou-dè tēn ei-kó-na au-toû}, kai ouk élabon tò charagma {καὶ οὐκ ἔλαβον τὸ χάραγμα | kaí ouk é-la-bon tò chá-rag-ma} details their refusal under persecution, with the dual prepositions epí tò métōpon kai epí tēn kheîra autōn {ἐπὶ τὸ μέτωπον καὶ ἐπὶ τὴν χεῖρα αὐτῶν | epí tò mé-tō-pon kai epí tēn khêi-ra au-tôn} specifying the sign’s placement. The final aorists ézēsan kai ebasíleusan metà toû khristōû {ἔζησαν καὶ ἐβασίλευσαν μετὰ τοῦ χριστοῦ | é-zē-san kaí e-ba-sí-leu-san me-tà toû chri-stôu} “they lived and reigned with Christ” convey eschatological vindication over chília étē {χίλια ἔτη | khí-li-a é-tē} “a thousand years.” English punctuation divides the Greek coordination to preserve the progression from vision to vindication to reign.
