Exegesis

The shift to direct speech begins with vayomer {וַיֹּאמֶר֙ | wayyōmer} ‘and he said’ and hamelech {הַמֶּלֶךְ֙ | ham-méleḵ} ‘the king’, followed by the imperative shevu {שְׁבוּ֙ | šĕḇû} ‘stay’ and the locative bi-rekho {בִירֵח֔וֹ | bî-reḥô} ‘in Jericho’.
