Exegesis

The conjunction kî {כִּי | kî} ‘that’ introduces a causal clause conveying their realization that they hitbāʾašû {הִתְבָּאֲשׁוּ | hitbāʾašû} ‘became detestable’ to Dāwîd {דָּוִד | Dāwîd}, where the Hitpael perfect expresses a reflexive shift in status.
