1 Samuel 21:3ExegesisTAB

1 Samuel 21 : 3 · WLC 21:4 Request | Provision | Possession
3. Linguistic Exegesis
The narrative shifts into direct speech with the vav-consecutive form vayomer {וַיֹּאמֶר | way-yō-mēr} ‘and he said’, introducing David’s request to the singular recipient lo {לוֹ | lō} ‘to him’ (the priest). The paired interrogatives mah-yesh {מָה־יֶּשׁ | māh-yēsh} ‘what is there’ and uma-yesh {וּמָה יֵּשׁ | ū-māh yēsh} ‘and what is there’ frame beyadekha {בְּיָדְךָ | bə-yā-ḏě-kā} ‘in your hand’ and lekha {לְּךָ | lə-ḵā} ‘to you’, clarifying possession and availability. The Qal imperative ten-li {תֵּן־לִּי | tê-n lî} ‘give to me’ introduces the direct request, with chalavot {חַלָּבוֹת | ḥă-lā-ḇōṯ} ‘loaves’ quantified by the cardinal number chamishah {חֲמִשָּׁה | ḥă-mî-šāh}. The conditional clause im-yesh {אִם־יֵּשׁ | ’im-yēsh} ‘if there is’ restricts the plea to the priest’s resources. This progression of interrogatives into a conditional imperative conveys both respect and urgency in David’s appeal.
