1 Samuel 21:5:1וַיַּעַן֩vayaanand answered
1 Samuel 21:5:2דָּוִ֨דdavidDavid 1 Samuel 21:5:3אֶת־הַכֹּהֵ֜ןethakhohen{to} the priest 1 Samuel 21:5:4וַיֹּ֣אמֶרvayomerand said 1 Samuel 21:5:5ל֗וֹloto him 1 Samuel 21:5:6כִּ֣יkithat 1 Samuel 21:5:7אִם־אִשָּׁ֔הimishaa woman 1 Samuel 21:5:8עֲצֻרָ֖ה־לָ֣נוּatsuralanuhas been kept from us 1 Samuel 21:5:9כִּתְמ֣וֹלkitmolas yesterday 1 Samuel 21:5:10שִׁלְשֹׁ֑םshilshomand the day before 1 Samuel 21:5:11בְּצֵאתִ֣יbetsetiwhen I went out 1 Samuel 21:5:12וַיִּֽהְי֣וּvayihyuand they were 1 Samuel 21:5:13כְלֵֽי־הַנְּעָרִ֗יםkheleihanearimthe vessels of the young men 1 Samuel 21:5:14קֹ֛דֶשׁkodeshholy 1 Samuel 21:5:15וְה֥וּאvehuand it 1 Samuel 21:5:16דֶּֽרֶךְ־חֹ֖לderekhkholan ordinary way 1 Samuel 21:5:17וְאַ֣ףveafand even 1 Samuel 21:5:18כִּֽי־הַיּ֔וֹםkihayomthat today 1 Samuel 21:5:19יִקְדַּ֥שׁyikdashit will be holy 1 Samuel 21:5:20בַּכֶּֽלִי׃bakheliin the vessel
5. Formal Translation
And David said to Achiel the priest, “Truly the women have been withheld from us just as when I went out, for the bodies of the young men are consecrated in this matter.”
5. Dynamic Translation
David told Achiel the priest, “Actually women have been kept from us as usual when I go out, because the young men’s bodies are regarded as sacred in this matter.”
