2 Chronicles 12:3ExegesisTAB

2 Chronicles 12 : 3 Army | Multitude | Allies
3. Linguistic Exegesis
The verse opens with the prepositional phrase be-elef {בְּאֶ֤לֶף | bə-ʾé-lef} ‘with a thousand’ joined to u-maatayim {וּמָאתַ֙יִם֙ | ū-maʾ-ă-tá-yim} ‘and two hundred’, specifying the chariot force. The collective noun rekhev {רֶ֔כֶב | rə-khêv} and the parallel numeral phrase u-ve-shishim elef {וּבְשִׁשִּׁ֥ים אֶ֖לֶף | ū-ḇĕ-šhísh-īm ʾé-léf} ‘and with sixty thousand’ modify parashim {פָּרָשִׁ֑ים | pā-rā-ʾa-šîm}. The clause ve-ein mispar la-am {וְאֵ֣אין מִסְפָּ֗ר לָעָ֞ם | ve-ʾê-īn mis-pār lā-ʿām} uses the negative existential to signal an incalculable multitude and introduces a relative clause with asher linking bau immo {בָּ֤אוּ עִמּוֹ֙ | bā-ʾû ʿim-mō} ‘they came with him’ to mimitzrayim {מִמִּצְרַ֔יִם | mi-mịẓ-rā-yīm} ‘from Egypt’. The enumeration of luviyim {לוּבִ֥ים | lu-vī-yim}, sukkiyim {סֻכִּיִּ֖ים | suk-kī-yim}, and vekushim {וְכוּשִֽׁים | və-kū-šīm} climaxes the list of allied peoples, preserving Hebrew emphasis in English renderings.
