Source Text: Hebrew (WLC) 2 Chronicles 28:23:1 ⧉וַיִּזְבַּ֗חvayizbakhand he sacrificed 2 Chronicles 28:23:2 ⧉לֵֽאלֹהֵ֣יleloheito the gods of 2 Chronicles 28:23:3 ⧉דַרְמֶשֶׂק֮darmesekDamascus 2 Chronicles 28:23:4 ⧉הַמַּכִּ֣יםhamakimthe ones striking 2 Chronicles 28:23:5 ⧉בּוֹ֒bohim 2 Chronicles 28:23:6 ⧉וַיֹּ֗אמֶרvayomerand he said 2 Chronicles 28:23:7 ⧉כִּ֠יkibecause 2 Chronicles 28:23:8 ⧉אֱלֹהֵ֤יeloheithe gods of 2 Chronicles 28:23:9 ⧉מַלְכֵֽי־אֲרָם֙malkheiaramthe kings of Aram 2 Chronicles 28:23:10 ⧉הֵ֚םhemthey 2 Chronicles 28:23:11 ⧉מַעְזְרִ֣יםmazerimhelping 2 Chronicles 28:23:12 ⧉אוֹתָ֔םotamthem 2 Chronicles 28:23:13 ⧉לָהֶ֥םlahemto them 2 Chronicles 28:23:14 ⧉אֲזַבֵּ֖חַazabeakhI will sacrifice 2 Chronicles 28:23:15 ⧉וְיַעְזְר֑וּנִיveyazeruniand they will help me 2 Chronicles 28:23:16 ⧉וְהֵ֛םvehembut they 2 Chronicles 28:23:17 ⧉הָֽיוּ־ל֥וֹhayulowere to him 2 Chronicles 28:23:18 ⧉לְהַכְשִׁיל֖וֹlehakhshiloto cause him to stumble 2 Chronicles 28:23:19 ⧉וּלְכָל־יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ulekholyisraeland to all Israel |
| 23. Formal Translation And he sacrificed to the gods of Damascus—the deities that had struck him—and said, “Because the gods of the kings of Aram are aiding them, I will sacrifice to them so they may aid me.” But they became a cause for his stumbling and for all Israel. |
| 23. Dynamic Translation He offered sacrifices to the gods of Damascus, who had defeated him, and said, “Since the gods of the kings of Aram provide them assistance, I will sacrifice to these gods so they will support me as well.” But these gods became his downfall and brought disaster on all Israel. |
