2 Samuel 13:34ExegesisTAB

2 Samuel 13 : 34 Flight | Vigilance | Crowd
34. Linguistic Exegesis
The verse begins with the vav-consecutive imperfect va-yib’rakh {וַיִּבְרַ֖ח | wayyib-raḥ} ‘and he fled’, marking sequential narrative action. The proper name Avshalom {אַבְשָׁל֑וֹם | ’Av-šalom} identifies the subject. A second vav-consecutive verb va-yissa {וַיִּשָּׂ֞א | wayyis’sa} ‘and he lifted’ with the participle ha-ṣō-pheh {הַצֹּפֶה֙ | ha-ṣō-pheh} ‘watchman’ frames the sentinel’s role. The attention particle we-hinne {וְהִנֵּ֨ה | we-hinne} ‘and behold’ introduces the observation before the verb vayar {וַיַּ֗רְא | wayyar} ‘and he saw’. The noun phrase ‘am rav holekhim {עַם־רַב הֹלְכִ֥ים | ‘am rav holekhim} ‘a great crowd walking’ uses the participle holchim and the adjective rav to qualify ‘am. Two prepositional phrases, mi-derekh {מִדֶּ֛رֶךְ | mid-derekh} ‘by the road’ and mit-tsad ha-har {מִצַּד הָהָֽר | mit-tsad ha-har} ‘by the side of the hill’, supply spatial orientation. English mirrors the vav-consecutive flow in successive clauses and preserves the participial sense of continuous movement.
