2 Samuel 15:20ExegesisTAB

2 Samuel 15 : 20 Arrival | Uncertainty | Loyalty
20. Linguistic Exegesis
The verse begins with temol {תְּמ֣וֹל | tə-mōl} ‘yesterday’ and the coordinating ve-hayom {וְהַיּ֞וֹם | wə-hǎ-yôm} ‘and today,’ creating a stark temporal contrast. The Hifil imperfect verbs ano’akha {אֲנ֣וֹעָכָה | ʾănō-’ā-ḵā} ‘I will make you wander’ and ani’akha {אֲנִֽיעֲךָ | ʾănî-’ā-ḵā} ‘I will send you away’ share the infinitive lalekhet {לָלֶ֔כֶת | lā-lê-ḵeṯ} ‘to go,’ marking purpose. The reflexive clause va’ani holekh al asher ani holekh {וַאֲנִ֣י הוֹלֵ֔ךְ עַ֥ל אֲשֶׁר־אֲנִ֖י הוֹלֵ֑ךְ | wǎ-ʾănî hō-lêḵ ʿǎl ʾă-šer ʾănî hō-lêḵ} ‘and I am going to where I am going’ uses repetition of the participle holekh to underscore directionless motion. The imperatives shuv and vehashev coordinate a summons to return and restore the direct object akhêkha {אַחֶ֛יךָ | ’a-ḥê-ḵā} ‘your brothers.’ The blessing closes with the paired nouns chesed {חֶ֥סֶד | ḥe-sed} ‘kindness/loyal love’ and ’emet {וֶאֱמֶת | wə-ʾe-meṯ} ‘faithfulness,’ a conventional merism denoting covenantal fidelity. The English rendering preserves Hebrew parallelism and rhetorical questioning while smoothing transitions.
