Acts 16 : 1 Travel | Discipleship | Heritage
1. Linguistic Exegesis
The aorist verb Katentesen {Κατήντησεν | Katḗntēsen} introduces a new stage in the journey, with the postpositive de {δὲ | dè} linking to what came before. The paired prepositional phrases eis Derbēn kai eis Lýstran {εἰς Δέρβην καὶ εἰς Λύστραν | eis Dérbēn kaí eis Lýstran} place equal emphasis on each city. The conjunction kai idou {καὶ ἰδοὺ | kaí idoú} shifts focus to a person. The nominative mathetes tis {μαθητής τις | mathētḗs tis} “a certain disciple” becomes the new subject, and the imperfect ēn with adverb ekei {ἦν ἐκεῖ | ēn ekeî} situates him “there.” The dative onomati {ὀνόματι | onómati} marks “by name” before introducing Timotheos {Τιμόθεος | Timótheos}. The noun huios {υἱὸς | huiós} “son” is expanded by two genitives: gynaikos Ioudaias pistes {γυναικὸς Ἰουδαίας πιστῆς | gynaikós Ioudaías pistês} on his mother’s Jewish faith, then patros de Hellenos {πατρὸς δὲ Ἕλληνος | patrós dè Héllēnos} marking his Greek father by contrast. The formal version preserves the single Greek sentence’s flow, while the dynamic version breaks into two clauses for clarity.
