Daniel 4:13ExegesisTAB

Daniel 4 : 13 · WLC 4:10 Vision | Messenger | Heaven
13. Linguistic Exegesis
The Aramaic sentence opens with a periphrastic verbal construction: ḥāzēh {חָזֵה | ḥāzēh} ‘looking’ (participle) plus hăwēṯ {הֲוֵית | hăwēṯ} ‘I was’, which together convey an ongoing past action, best rendered as “I was looking” rather than a simple “I saw.” The prepositional phrase bəḥezwê rēšî {בְחֶזְוֵי רֵאשִׁי | bəḥezwê rēšî} ‘in the visions of my head’ places the experience internally, in the dreamer’s mind, and the following phrase ʿal-miškəḇî {עַל־מִשְׁכְּבִי | ʿal-miškəḇî} ‘upon my bed’ locates him physically, creating a contrast between inner revelation and outward rest. The interjection waʾălû {וַאֲלוּ | waʾălû} ‘and behold’ functions as a discourse marker introducing a new, striking element of the vision. The coordinated expressions ʿîr {עִיר | ʿîr} ‘watcher’ and wəqaddîš {וְקַדִּישׁ | wəqaddîš} ‘and a holy one’ can be understood appositionally as two titles for the same heavenly being, emphasizing both vigilance and sanctity. The phrase min-šmayyāʾ {מִן־שְׁמַיָּא | min-šmayyāʾ} ‘from heaven’ followed by nāḥiṯ {נָחִת | nāḥiṯ} ‘came down’ underscores descent from the divine realm; rendering this as “came down from heaven” in English preserves both direction and source while maintaining natural subject–verb–complement order.
