Back in the royal court with his advisers

Inside the city with merchants and guards

He is immediately restored to normal life

That human strength keeps control if it lasts long enough

That the highest ruler governs human kingdoms and assigns them as he chooses

That the time only passes so the ruler can rest

Protect your status first, because power proves your worth

Hold power lightly, use it for good, and stay ready to submit it to God

Wait until hardship forces humility, then rethink your pride

Use authority to keep apart from ordinary people

If you would like to receive Jesus, pray this with me: Lord Jesus, I admit that I have sinned and tried to live as if I were in charge. I turn from my sin and ask you to forgive me. I believe you died for me and rose again. I confess you as Lord, and I ask you to reign over my life with mercy and power. Teach me to follow you and trust your good rule. Amen.

Come Under Your Rule

Lord, revive your church with humility and holy fear. Where we have chased influence, success, or self-importance, bring us back under your rule. Teach us to live as people who know that you alone give authority and take it away, and make us faithful in every season, in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Revive a Humble Church

Pray by naming one area where you have been acting as if control belonged to you. Confess that to God, ask him to humble you without hardening you, and ask for a softer heart that learns his rule before life has to teach it.

How to Pray When Pride Rises

Pray for leaders, employers, parents, and anyone with influence: that they would remember their authority is entrusted, not ultimate, and use it with justice, mercy, and restraint, in the name of Jesus. Amen.

For Leaders and Rulers

Father, when I feel stripped of comfort, dignity, or control, keep me from bitterness. Teach me to trust that you are still ruling, even in seasons that feel wild and unfamiliar, in the name of Jesus. Amen.

When I Am Humbled

We thank you that no kingdom is beyond your hand and no ruler can outrun your wisdom. Thank you that your rule is good, that you are never surprised, and that you can use humbling moments to bring people to truth. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
