1 And the LORD {YHWH, Restorer of Covenant} said to Moses, “Carve for yourself two tablets of stone like the first ones, and I will write on the tablets the words {devarim: declarative utterances} that were on the first tablets, which you broke.”
2 And be ready {nakhon: fully prepared} for the morning, and you shall go up in the morning to Mount Sinai and present yourself to Me {li: Divine Summoner} there on the top of the mountain.
3 And no one {ish: exclusive person} shall ascend with you, nor shall anyone be seen on the entire mountain; even the flocks {tson: pastoral herd} and the cattle must not graze before that mountain.
4 And he chiseled two stone tablets like the first ones, and Moses rose early in the morning and went up to Mount Sinai, as the LORD {YHWH, Covenant Renewer} had commanded {tsivvah: authoritative instruction} him, and he took the two stone tablets in his hand.
5 Then the LORD {YHWH, Divine Revealer} descended in a cloud {anan: visible manifestation} and stood there with him, and He proclaimed the name of the LORD.
6 And the LORD {YHWH, Covenant-Keeper} passed in front of him and proclaimed, “The LORD, the LORD God, is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in covenant loyalty {chesed: steadfast love} and faithfulness.”
7 Guarding loyal love {chesed: Covenant Faithfulness} for thousands, lifting up iniquity, and transgression, and sin; yet He {YHWH, Just Judge} does not clear the guilty; He visits iniquity of fathers upon sons and upon sons of sons, upon the third and upon the fourth generation.
8 And Moses {Mosheh: Faithful Leader} hurried and bowed his head toward the ground, and he worshiped {yishtachu: full submission}.
9 And he said, If now I have found favor in Your eyes, O Lord {Adonai, Sovereign Sustainer}, let my Lord go in our midst, for this is a stiff-necked {kshe-oref: obstinate in heart} people, and forgive our iniquity and our sin and take us as Your inheritance.
10 And He said, “Behold, I am making a covenant {berit: binding agreement} before all your people. I will do wonders that have not been created in all the land or in any nation. And all the people among whom you are will see the work of the LORD {YHWH, Covenant Miracle Worker}, for it is an awesome thing that I am doing with you.”
11 Keep {shemar: vigilant obedience} for yourself what I {anokhi: emphatic self-declaration} command you today. Behold, I am driving out from before you the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite.
12 Beware for yourself, lest you make a covenant {berit: binding agreement} with the inhabitants of the land you are entering, lest it become a snare {mokesh: spiritual trap} within you.
13 For you shall break down their altars {mizbechotam: pagan worship sites}, shatter their standing stones, and cut down their Asherim {asherav: wooden idols}.
14 For you shall not bow down to another god {acher: rival deity}, for the LORD {YHWH, Zealous Protector} whose name is Jealous is a jealous God.
15 Lest you make a covenant {berit: binding agreement} with the inhabitants of the land, and they prostitute themselves after their gods {elohehem: objects of worship} and sacrifice to them; and they call you, and you eat of their sacrifice.
16 And when you take {velakhta: take in marriage} their daughters for your sons, and they prostitute themselves {zanu: covenant betrayal} after their gods, they will cause your sons to prostitute themselves after their gods.
17 You shall not make for yourself gods {elohei: lifeless deities} of molten image {massekhah: cast metal idol}.
18 You shall keep the Festival {khag: sacred gathering} of Unleavened Bread for seven days; you shall eat unleavened bread as I commanded you at the appointed time in the month of Aviv {aviv: spring ripening}, for in that month you went out of Egypt.
19 Every firstborn {peter: birth opener} of the womb belongs to Me {YHWH, Sovereign Claimant}, and every firstborn male of your livestock—whether ox or sheep—belongs to Me.
20 And the firstborn donkey {khamor: designated substitute} you shall redeem with a lamb; but if you do not redeem it, you shall break its neck. You shall redeem every firstborn of your sons. And none shall appear before My {YHWH, Sovereign Judge} face empty-handed.
21 Six days you shall work{ta'avod: labor obligation}, but on the seventh day you shall rest; even in plowing{becharish: cultivation stage} and in harvest you shall rest.
22 And you shall keep the Festival {chag: sacred gathering} of Weeks for yourself with the firstfruits of the wheat harvest, and the Festival of Ingathering {asif: seasonal gathering} at the turning of the year.
23 Three times {pe’amim: pilgrimage festivals} in the year all your males shall appear before the face of the Lord, the LORD God of Israel {YHWH Elohei Yisrael, Covenant King}.
24 For I will dispossess nations before you and enlarge your border, and no man will covet your land when you go up to appear before the face of the LORD your God {YHWH Elohecha, National Protector} three times in the year {shanah: annual cycle}.
25 You must not offer the blood of My {YHWH, Sovereign Owner} sacrifice {zivchi: covenant sacrifice} with anything leavened {chamets: defiling element}, nor shall the Passover festival sacrifice remain until morning.
26 You shall bring the best of the firstfruits {bikkurei: earliest offerings} of your land to the house of the LORD God {YHWH Elohim, Covenant Lawgiver}; you shall not boil a young goat in its mother’s milk.
27 And the LORD {YHWH, Covenant-Maker} said to Moses, “Write for yourself these words {devarim: spoken commands}, for according to these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel.”
28 And he was there with the LORD {YHWH, Covenant Revealer} forty days and forty nights; bread he did not eat, and water he did not drink. And he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant {berit: binding agreement}, the Ten Words.
29 And it happened that when Moses descended from Mount Sinai with the two tablets of the testimony {ha’edut: covenant record} in his hand, he did not know that the skin of his face shone because he had spoken with Him {YHWH, Divine Radiance}.
30 When Aaron and all the Israelites saw Moses and noticed that the skin of his face was shining {qaran: radiated light}, they were afraid to draw near {migeshet: come close} to him.
31 And Moses called to them, and Aaron and all the leaders {nesi’im: tribal chiefs} of the assembly {edah: community gathering} returned to him, and Moses spoke to them.
32 And after that, all the sons of Israel came near, and he gave them all the commands {tsavah: authoritative instructions} which the LORD {YHWH, Covenant Lawgiver} had spoken with him on Mount Sinai.
33 When Moses finished speaking {midabber: declaring with authority} with them, he put a veil {masveh: face covering} upon his face.
34 And whenever Moses entered before the LORD {YHWH, Divine Communicator} to speak with Him, he would remove the veil {masveh: covering barrier} until he went out; and when he went out, he would speak to the sons of Israel all that he was commanded.
35 And the sons of Israel saw Moses’ face shining, and Moses put the veil {masveh: face-covering} over his face until he went in to speak with Him {YHWH, Presence Dweller}.
