Ezekiel 13:9ExegesisTAB

Ezekiel 13 : 9 Judgment | Exclusion | Authority
9. Linguistic Exegesis
The verse begins with the waw-consecutive vehayetah {וְהָיְתָ֣ה | wə-hā-yə-ṯāh} ‘and shall be’, marking a divine pronouncement. The phrase yadi el {יָדִ֗י אֶל־ | yā-ḏî ʾel} ‘my hand against’ expresses divine opposition idiomatically. A relative clause hanneviim hachozim {הַנְּבִיאִ֞ים הַחֹזִ֣ים | han-nə-ḇî-ʾîm ha-ḥō-zîm} ‘the prophets who see’ modifies shav {שָׁוְא֮ | šāwʾ} ‘vanity’, paralleled by vehakosim kazav {וְהַקֹּסְמִ֣ים כָּזָב | wə-ha-qōs-mîm kā-zāḇ} ‘the diviners of lies’ to emphasize falsehood. Three successive negations lo-yihyu {לֹא־יִהְיוּ | lōʾ-yi-ḥyû}, lo-yikatevu {לֹא יִכָּתֵ֔בוּ | lōʾ-yiḵ-kā-ṯê-ḇû}, and lo-yavo’u {לֹא יָבֹ֑אוּ | lōʾ-yā-bōʾû} frame exclusion from the council, registry, and land of Israel. The concluding formula viyadatem ki ani adonai Yahweh {וִידַעְתֶּם כִּי אֲנִי אֲדֹנָי יְהוִֽה | wî-ya-ḏaʿ-tem kî ʾă-nî ʾă-dō-nāy Yə-hō-wāh} ‘and you shall know that I am the Lord GOD’ asserts divine authority behind the judgment.
