Hosea 13 : 8 Judgment | Wrath | Destruction
8. Linguistic Exegesis
The verse is a single, escalating threat framed in first person verbal sequence: efgeshem {אֶפְגְּשֵׁם֙ | ʾefgešēm} ‘I will meet them’ sets direct confrontation, and the successive imperfects (veeqra {וְאֶקְרַ֖ע | wə-ʾeqraʿ} ‘and I will tear open’, veokhlem {וְאֹכְלֵ֥ם | wə-ʾokhlēm} ‘and I will devour them’) move from encounter to dismembering to consumption. Two similes heighten the predatory imagery: kedov shakhol {כְּדֹ֣ב שָׁכ֔וּל | kə-dōv šākûl} evokes the uncontrolled rage of a bereaved bear, and kelavi {כְּלָבִ֔יא | kə-lāvî} intensifies the scene with lion-like devouring. The phrase segor libbam {סְג֣וֹר לִבָּ֑ם | səgôr libbām} is a compact noun phrase that pictures the heart as having an enclosing cover; English “covering” preserves the violent image without forcing a specific anatomical term. The final clause shifts the grammatical subject to khayyat hassadeh {חַיַּ֥ת הַשָּׂדֶ֖ה | ḥayyat haś-śā-ḏeh} ‘beast of the field’, and the third person feminine singular verb tevaqem {תְּבַקְּעֵֽם | təvaqqəʿēm} ‘she will rip them open’ treats the collective “beast” as a feminine singular, keeping the Hebrew personification while allowing a natural English subject (“a wild animal”).
