Hosea 13 : 9 Rebellion | Ruin | Help
9. Linguistic Exegesis
The verse opens with shikhetkha {שִׁחֶתְךָ֥ | šiḥeṯḵā} ‘he has destroyed you,’ a finite verb with an explicit second-person object suffix, placing Israel in the role of the devastated party while leaving the agent implicit (understood from context as Israel’s own course of sin and its consequences). The direct vocative Yisra'el {יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל | yiś-rā-ʾēl} heightens the accusation by naming the covenant community being addressed. The clause introduced by ki-bi {כִּי־בִ֣י | kî-bî} supplies the reason, but it is expressed through two prepositional phrases without an overt verb, requiring English to supply a copula (“you are”). The repeated bet-phrases (bi … beezrekha) can be read locatively (“in Me is your help”) or adversatively (“against Me…against your help/Helper”); the adversative sense coheres with the prophetic rebuke by portraying Israel’s stance as opposition to the very One who is its help, so the translation renders bet as “against” while preserving the tight parallelism and emphasis created by the repetition.
