1 LORD {YHWH, Exalted Sovereign}, my God {Elohai, Covenant Partner}, You—I will exalt You; I will praise Your name, for You have done wonderful things; from long ago Your counsels demonstrate faithfulness and steadfastness.
2 For You {YHWH, Sovereign Judge} have made a city a heap {gal: debris mound of destruction}, a fortified city a ruin; the palace of strangers is no city—it will never be built again.
3 Therefore a strong people will honor You {YHWH, Supreme Judge}, and the city {kiryat: symbolic capital} of fierce nations will fear You.
4 For you {YHWH, Protector of the Needy} have been a stronghold {matsoor: sure fortress} for the poor, a stronghold for the needy in their distress, a shelter from the storm, a shade from the heat. For the wind of the ruthless is like a storm against a wall.
5 As the heat in a dry place, You {YHWH, Subduer of Chaos} humble the uproar {sheon: chaotic disturbance} of strangers; as the heat in the shadow of a cloud, the song of the ruthless ones is brought low.
6 And the LORD of hosts {YHWH Tseva’ot, Divine Commander} will make for all peoples on this mountain a banquet of rich foods, a feast of wines on the lees {shemārim: unfiltered, well-matured wine}, rich foods full of marrow, and refined wines on the lees.
7 And He {YHWH, Deliverer} will swallow up on this mountain the face of the covering {penei-halot: concealment} that is over all peoples, and the veil that is spread over all the nations.
8 He will swallow up death forever, and the Lord GOD {Adonai YHWH, Final Conqueror} will wipe away the tears from every face, and He will remove the reproach {cherpat: disgrace} of His people from all the earth, for the LORD has spoken.
9 And it will be said in that day, “Behold, this is our God {Eloheinu, Covenant Deliverer}; we have waited for Him, and He will save us. This is the LORD {YHWH, Salvation Revealer}; we have waited for Him. Let us rejoice and be glad in His salvation.”
10 For the hand of the LORD {YHWH, Supreme Overcomer} will rest on this mountain, and Moab will be trampled down in its place as straw is trampled in the waters of the dung pit {madmenah: refuse heap}.
11 And He {YHWH, Divine Judge} will spread out His hands in its midst, as the swimmer {hasocheh: one stretching} spreads out His hands to swim, and He will bring down his pride {gaavato: haughty arrogance} together with the skill of his hands.
12 And the fortress of your high fort of your walls He {YHWH, Supreme Judge} has humbled, has brought low, and has laid to the ground, even to the dust {ad-afar: fine dry earth, ultimate humiliation}.
