Jeremiah 20:10ExegesisTAB

Jeremiah 20 : 10 Slander | Fear | Betrayal
10. Linguistic Exegesis
The conjunction ki {כִּי | kî} ‘for’ connects this lament to the preceding complaint. The perfect shamati {שָׁמַעְתִּי | šā-maʿ-tî} ‘I heard’ indicates Jeremiah’s personal perception of widespread hostility. The construct phrase dibbat rabbim {דִּבַּת רַבִּים | dib-bat rab-bîm} ‘slander of many’ underscores a collective defamation effort. The idiomatic pair magor misaviv {מָגוֹר מִסָּבִיב | mā-ḡōr mi-ssa-ḇîḇ} ‘terror on every side’ amplifies the sense of encirclement. The imperative hagidu {הַגִּידוּ | ha-gi-DU} and cohortative venagidenu {וְנַגִּידֶנּוּ | wə-nag-gî-DE-nu} reveal a conspiratorial call to denunciation. The participial cluster kol enosh shelomi shomrei tzali {כֹּל אֱנוֹשׁ שְׁלוֹמִ֔י שֹׁמְרֵ֖י צַלְעִ֑י | kōl ʾĕ-nōš shə-lō-mî šōm-rê ṣal-ʿî} ‘all the men of my peace watching for my stumbling’ highlights intimate betrayal. The triadic sequence ulai yefuteh… venuchla… venikcha {אוּלַי יְפֻתֶּה…וְנ֣וּכְלָה…וְנִקְחָ֥ה | ʾû-lay yə-phut-teh…wə-nûḵ-lā(h)…wə-niq-ḥāh} ‘perhaps he will be enticed… and we will prevail… and let us take’ creates a progression from enticement to conquest to vengeance, heightening dramatic tension.
