And Pashhur, the son of Immer, the priest and chief officer in the house of the LORD {YHWH, Temple Sovereign}, heard that Jeremiah had prophesied these words {hadvarim: spoken messages}.
And Pashhur struck Jeremiah the prophet, and he put him in the stocks {mahpekhet: restraint device} that were in the upper Benjamin Gate, which was by the house of the LORD {YHWH, Sanctuary Presence}.
And it came to pass on the next day that Pashhur brought Jeremiah out from the stocks. Then Jeremiah said to him, "The LORD {YHWH, Name-Renamer} has not called your name Pashhur, but rather Magor-Missaviv {magor: terror}."
For thus says the LORD {YHWH, Just Judge}, “Behold, I am making you a terror to yourself and to all your friends {ohavim: close associates}; and they will fall by the sword of their enemies as you watch. All of Judah I will give into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he will exile them to Babylon and strike them down with the sword.”
And I {YHWH, Sovereign Judge} will give all the resources {hosen: wealth reserves} of this city, all its gains, all its precious things, and all the treasures of the kings of Judah into the hands of their enemies, and they will plunder them, take them, and bring them to Babylon.
And you, Pashhur, and all the inhabitants of your house will go into captivity, and to Babylon you will go; and there you will die and be buried, you and all your friends {o-haveikha: close associates}, to whom you have prophesied lies {ba-sheker: deliberate falsehood}.
You have deceived me, O LORD {YHWH, Sovereign Conqueror}, and I was deceived; You have prevailed over me, and You have overcome. I have become a laughingstock {lisḥoq: object of ridicule} all day long; everyone mocks me.
For whenever I speak, I cry out; I call, “Violence and destruction!” For the word of the LORD {YHWH, Prophetic Voice} has become for me reproach {kherpah: public shame} and derision all the day.
And I said, “I will not mention Him {YHWH, Covenant Messenger}, nor speak any more in His name. But His word was in my heart like a burning fire shut up in my bones {etzmotai: seat of inner strength}, and I was weary with holding it in, and I could not endure.”
For I have heard the slander {dibbat: defaming rumor} of many, terror on every side. “Report,” they say, “and let us report him.” All the men of my peace are waiting for my stumbling, saying, “Perhaps he will be enticed, and we can prevail against him, and we will take our vengeance {nikmatenu: retributive justice} from him.”
But the LORD {YHWH, Mighty Protector} is with me as a mighty and terrible one; therefore my pursuers will stumble and not prevail. They will be greatly ashamed, for they have not prospered {hiskilu: found success}. Their everlasting disgrace will never be forgotten.
But you, O LORD of hosts {YHWH Tsevaot, Supreme Warrior}, who examine the righteous {tsaddiq: justified one} and see the kidneys and heart, let me see your vengeance on them, for to you I have revealed my cause.
Sing to the LORD {YHWH, Deliverer} and praise Him, for He has delivered the soul {nefesh: inner life} of the poor from the hand of evildoers.
Cursed {arur: formal curse formula} be the day on which I was born; let not the day that my mother bore me {yeladatni: active giving birth} be blessed.
Cursed be the man who brought good news {bissar: joyful announcement} to my father, saying, “A male child has been born to you,” making him exceedingly glad {sammeach: causing to rejoice fully}.
And let that man be like the cities {ʿārīm: walled towns} which the LORD {YHWH, Just Judge} overthrew and did not relent; and let him hear a cry in the morning and an alarm at midday.
Because he did not kill me in the womb {merechem: place of origin}, my mother became my grave, and her womb experienced everlasting pregnancy {harat olam: perpetual conception}.
Why did I come forth from the womb to see labor {amal: burdensome toil} and sorrow, and to have my days consumed in shame {boshet: abiding disgrace}?
