Jeremiah 22 : 30 Judgment | Succession | Legacy
30. Linguistic Exegesis
The verse opens with the prophetic formula ko {כֹּה | kō} ‘thus’ plus amar {אָמַר | ʾā-mar} ‘he said’, establishing a divine address by Yahweh {יְהוָה | Yə-hō-wāh}. The imperative kitvu {כִּתְבוּ | kit-ḇû} ‘write’ calls for an official record, with et-ha-ish hazzeh {אֶת־הָאִישׁ הַזֶּה | ʾet-hā-ʾîš haz-zeh} ‘this man’ as direct object. The adjective ariri {עֲרִירִי | ʿărîrî} ‘childless’ is further specified by the participial clause gever lo-yitslach be-yamav {גֶּבֶר לֹא־יִצְלַח בְּיָמָיו | ge-ḇer lō-yiṣ-laḥ bə-yā-māw} ‘a man who will not succeed in his days’. The conjunction ki {כִּי | kî} ‘for’ introduces the reason clause lo-yitslach mi-zarʿo ish yoshev al-kisse David u-moshel od bi-Yehudah {לֹא יִצְלַח מִזַּרְע֗וֹ אִישׁ יֹשֵׁב עַל־כִּסֵּא דָוִד וּמֹשֵׁל עוֹד בִּיהוּדָה | lō-yiṣ-laḥ mi-zarʿo ʾîš yō-šêḇ ʿal-kis-sê dā-ḇîḏ û-mō-šēl ʿôḏ bi-yə-hū-ḏā(h)} ‘none from his seed will sit on David’s throne or rule anymore in Judah’. The serial participles and the adverb od {עוֹד | ʿôḏ} ‘anymore’ underscore the irrevocable cessation of royal succession.
