Exegesis

The verse opens with an articular participial construction ho athetōn eme kai mē lambanōn ta rhēmata mou {ὁ ἀθετῶν ἐμὲ καὶ μὴ λαμβάνων τὰ ῥήματά μου | ho a-the-tōn e-mè kai mē lam-ba-nōn ta rhē-ma-tá mou}. The article ho turns the present participles athetōn and lambanōn into a substantive description, yielding “the one who is rejecting Me and not receiving My words,” which functions as the grammatical subject of the main clause.

A second nominative phrase follows: ho logos hon elalēsa ekeinos {ὁ λόγος ὃν ἐλάλησα ἐκεῖνος | ho lóg-os hon e-lá-lē-sa e-keî-nos}, in which the head noun ho logos, modified by the relative clause hon elalēsa (“which I spoke”), is further specified by the demonstrative ekeinos (“that one”).
