1 Therefore Jesus {Iesous, Resurrection Revealer} came to Bethany six days before the Passover, where Lazarus {Lazaros: formerly dead man} was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead.
2 So they prepared a supper {deipnon: main evening meal} for Him {Iesous, Honored Guest} there; and Martha was serving, but Lazarus was one of those reclining with Him at the table.
3 Therefore Mary, having taken a pound of very costly pure nard ointment, anointed the feet of Jesus {Iesous, Honored Messiah} and wiped His feet with her hair {thrix: personal adornment}, and the house was filled with the fragrance of the ointment.
4 But Judas Iscariot {Ioudas Iskariotes: Foretold Betrayer}, one of His {Iesous: Soon-To-Be-Betrayed Lord} disciples, the one who was about to betray Him, said,
5 Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii {denarion: Roman silver coin}, and given to the poor {ptochos: those in need}?
6 He said this, not because he was concerned about the poor {ptochon: those lacking resources}, but because he was a thief and, having the money box {glossokomon: shared funds container}, he used to carry off what was being put into it.
7 Then Jesus {Iesous, Foretelling His Burial} said, "Let her be, so that she may keep it for the day of My burial {entafiasmos: preparation for entombment}."
8 For you always have the poor {ptochous: materially destitute} with you, but you do not always have Me {Iesous, Nearing Crucifixion}.
9 Therefore a large crowd from among the Jews knew that He was there, and they came not only because of Jesus {Iesous, Resurrection Miracle Worker} but also so that they might see Lazarus {Lazaros: God has helped}, whom He had raised from the dead.
10 But the chief priests {archiereis: temple leaders} planned that they also might kill Lazarus {Lazaros: whom God helps},
11 Because many of the Jews were going away on account of him and were believing {episteuon: steady trust} in Jesus {Iesous, Promised Messiah}.
12 On the next day, the large crowd {ochlos: many festival pilgrims} who had come to the feast, having heard that Jesus {Iesous, Coming King} was coming into Jerusalem,
13 They took the branches {baia: festive symbols} of the palm trees and went out to meet Him {Iesous, Promised Messiah}, and they were crying out, “Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord {Kyrios, Covenant Lord}, even the King {basileus: national deliverer} of Israel.”
14 And Jesus {Iesous, Messianic King} found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written {gegrammenon: recorded in Scripture}.
15 Do not fear, daughter of Zion {Sion: covenant city}; behold, your King {basileus: rightful ruler} is coming, seated on a colt of a donkey.
16 His disciples {mathetai: close apprentices} did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus {Iesous, Exalted Messiah} was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about Him and that they had done these things to Him.
17 Therefore the crowd that was with Him {Iesous, Life-Restoring Lord} when He called Lazarus out of the tomb {mnemeion: burial place} and raised him from the dead was bearing witness.
18 For this reason also the crowd met Him {Iesous, Worker of Signs} because they heard that He had done this sign {semeion: miraculous indicator}.
19 Therefore the Pharisees {Pharisaioi: strict religious party} said to one another, “You see that you are not accomplishing anything. Look, the world has gone after Him {Iesous: Sought-After Messiah}.”
20 But there were some Greeks among those going up {anabainonton: ascending pilgrims} in order to worship at the feast {heorte: pilgrimage festival}.
21 So these came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida {Bethsaida: fishing town} of Galilee, and they were asking him, saying, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus {Iesous, Sought Messiah}.”
22 Philip comes and says to Andrew {Andrea: addressed companion}, and then Andrew and Philip come and say to Jesus {Iesous, Approached Teacher}.
23 But Jesus {Iesous, Glory Revealer} answered them, saying, “The hour has come so that the Son of Man may be glorified {doxazo: to receive honor}.”
24 Truly, truly, I {Iesous, Self-Giving Teacher} say to you, unless the grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains by itself alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit {karpos: resulting increase}.
25 The one who loves his life loses it, and the one who hates {mison: renounces attachment} his life in this world will keep it for eternal life {zoen: never-ending life}.
26 If anyone serves Me {Iesous, Worthy Lord}, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will also be. If anyone serves Me, the Father {pater, Honors Servants} will honor him.
27 Now My soul is troubled, and what should I say? Father {Pater, Prayer Hearing Father}, save Me from this hour {hora: appointed time}; but for this reason I came to this hour.
28 Father {Pater, Glory-Granting Father}, glorify your name. Then a voice came from heaven {ouranos: divine realm}: "I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again."
29 Therefore the crowd {ochlos: gathered onlookers} that was standing there and heard it was saying that it had thundered; others were saying, “An angel has spoken to Him {Iesous, Addressed Lord}.”
30 Jesus {Iesous, Explaining Lord} answered and said, “This voice {phone: heavenly declaration} did not come for My sake, but for your sake.”
31 Now is the judgment {krisis: decisive verdict} of this world; now the ruler {archon: hostile authority} of this world will be cast outside.
32 And I {Iesous, Crucified Exalted One}, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all {pantas: every person} to Myself.
33 But He {Iesous, Foretelling His Death} was saying this, indicating by what kind of death He was about to die {apothneskein: undergo physical death}.
34 Therefore the crowd answered Him, “We have heard from the law that the Christ {Christos, Eternal Messiah King} remains forever, and how do You say that the Son of Man {huios tou anthropou: promised deliverer} must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?”
35 Then Jesus {Iesous, Present Guiding Light} said to them, “Yet a little while longer the Light is among you. Walk while you have the Light {phos: divine guidance}, so that darkness will not overtake you. And the one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going.”
36 While you have the light {phos: spiritual revelation}, believe in the light so that you may become sons {huioi: people formed-by-light} of light.
37 Even though He {Iesous, Sign-Giving Messiah} had done so many signs {semeia: revelatory works} before them, they did not believe in Him.
38 So that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he said: “Lord {Kyrios, Addressed Sovereign}, who has believed our report {akoe: message proclaimed}? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”
39 For this reason they were not able to believe {pisteuein: place trusting faith}, because again Isaiah {Esaias: prophetic messenger} said.
40 He {Theos, Sovereign Judge} has blinded their eyes and He has hardened their heart {kardia: inner understanding}, so that they would not see with their eyes, and understand with their heart, and turn, and I would heal them.
41 Isaiah {Esaias: prophetic witness} said these things because he saw His {Iesous, Revealed Glory} glory and spoke about Him.
42 Nevertheless, even among the rulers, many believed in Him {Iesous, Focus of Faith}, but because of the Pharisees they were not confessing Him, so that they would not become expelled from the synagogue {aposynagogoi: removed from assembly}.
43 For they loved the glory {doxa: honor approval} of men more than the glory of God {Theos, True Honor-Giver}.
44 And Jesus {Iesous, Sent Son} cried out and said, “The one who believes {pisteuo: continuing trust} in Me does not believe in Me, but in Him who sent Me.”
45 And the one who sees Me {Iesous, Visible Revealer} sees the One who sent Me {pempo: commissioned with authority}.
46 I {Iesous, Incarnate Light} have come as light into the world, so that everyone who believes in Me will not remain in darkness {skotia: spiritual ignorance}.
47 And if anyone hears My words and does not keep them, I {Iesous, Saving Lord} do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world, but to save {sōsō: deliver from judgment} the world.
48 The one rejecting {athetōn: deliberate refusal} Me {Iesous, Rejected Judge} and not receiving My words has a judge: the word which I have spoken, that very word will judge him in the last day.
49 For I {Iesous, Obedient Son} have not spoken from Myself, but the Father {Pater, Sending Authority} who sent Me, He Himself has given Me a commandment—what I should say and what I should speak.
50 And I {Iesous, Obedient Son} know that His commandment is eternal life. Therefore, the things that I speak, just as the Father {Pater, Life-Giving Source} has spoken to Me, so I speak.
