Exegesis

The coordinated clause kai hymeis katharoi este {καὶ ὑμεῖς καθαροί ἐστε | kai hy-meîs ka-tha-roí é-ste} extends this status to the disciples collectively, while the final ellipsis in allá ouchi pantes {ἀλλʼ οὐχὶ πάντες | allá ou-khí pán-tes} ‘but not all’ leaves the verb implied, heightening the contrast and anticipating the revelation of the betrayer. In translation, the perfect participle is represented as “has bathed” and “has already bathed” to reflect completed action with current relevance, the exception ei mē is rendered as “except,” and the adversative allá is consistently translated “but” to maintain the rhetorical balance.
