1 Now before the Feast of the Passover, Jesus {Iesous, Self-Giving Lord}, aware that His hour had come to depart from this world to the Father {pater, Welcoming Father}, having loved His own who were in the world, continued to love them until the very end.
2 And during supper, when the devil {diabolos, Malicious Accuser} had already put it into the heart of Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, that he might betray Him {Iesous, Soon-Sacrificed Lord}.
3 Jesus {Iesous, Serving Master}, knowing that the Father {pater, Sovereign Giver} had placed all things into His hands, and that He had come from God {Theos, Eternal Origin} and was returning to God.
4 He {Iesous, Serving Master} rose from the supper and set aside His garments {himatia: outer clothing}, and after taking a towel, He girded Himself.
5 Then He {Iesous, Serving Master} pours water into the basin and begins to wash the feet of the disciples and to wipe them with the towel {lentio: servant’s cloth} with which He was girded.
6 Then He comes to Simon Peter, and Peter says to Him, “Lord {Kyrios, Serving Master}, do You wash {nipto: humble cleansing} my feet?”
7 Jesus {Iesous, Revealer of Mysteries} answered and said to him, “You do not understand what I am doing at this time, but after these things {tauta: future moments} you will understand.”
8 Peter said to Him, “You will never wash my feet.” Jesus {Iesous, Servant Teacher} answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no share {meros: covenant participation} with Me.”
9 Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord {Kyrios, Foot-Washing Master}, not my feet only, but also my hands {cheiras: devoted service} and my head.”
10 Jesus {Iesous, Purifying Teacher} said to him, “The one who has bathed does not need to wash, except to wash his feet, but is entirely clean. And you are clean {katharos: spiritually pure}, but not all of you.”
11 For He {Iesous, All-Seeing Lord} knew the one who was betraying Him; because of this He said, “Not all of you are clean {katharoi: truly clean}.”
12 When therefore He {Iesous, Serving Lord} had washed their feet {pous: lowly service} and taken His garments, and reclined again, He said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you?”
13 You address Me as Teacher and Lord {Kyrios, Acknowledged Master}, and you speak rightly {kalos: in a fitting way}, because I am so.
14 If therefore I, the Lord {Kyrios, Humble Serving Master} and the Teacher {didaskalos: authoritative instructor}, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.
15 For I {Iesous, Self-Humbling Teacher} have given you a pattern {hypodeigma: standard to copy}, so that, as I did to you, you also may do.
16 Truly, truly, I {Iesous, Authoritative Teacher} tell you, a slave is not greater than his master, and a messenger {apostolos: Commissioned Envoy} is not greater than the one who sent him.
17 If you know these things, you are blessed {makarioi: deeply favored} if you do {poiete: put into practice} them.
18 I {Iesous, Discerning Lord} am not speaking concerning all of you; I know whom I have selected, but this is so that the Scripture {graphe: Sacred Writing} may be fulfilled: “The one who is eating My bread has lifted up his heel against Me.”
19 I {Iesous, Prophetic Revealer} now reveal in advance what is to come, so that when it transpires you may believe {pisteuo: confident trust} that I am He.
20 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever receives anyone I send receives Me {Iesous, Commissioning Lord}, and whoever receives Me receives Him {Theos, Sending Father} who sent Me.
21 After Jesus {Iesous, Sorrowing Messiah} had said these things, He was troubled in spirit {pneuma: inner being}, and He testified, saying, “Truly, truly, I say to you, one of you will betray Me.”
22 The disciples were looking at one another {allelous: mutual glance}, uncertain about whom He {Iesous, All-Knowing Teacher} was speaking.
23 One of His disciples was reclining in the bosom {kolpos: intimate nearness} of Jesus {Iesous, Gracious Host}, the one whom Jesus loved.
24 Simon Peter therefore motioned {neuei: Silent Signal} to this one to ask who it might be that He {Iesous, Betrayal Revealer} was speaking about.
25 That one, having reclined thus upon the chest of Jesus {Iesous, Beloved Teacher}, says to Him, “Lord {Kyrios, Trusted Master}, who is it?”
26 Jesus {Iesous, Revealer Of Betrayal} answered, “It is the one for whom I will dip the morsel {psomion: small bread piece} and then give it to him.” So, after dipping the morsel, He gave it to Judas, son of Simon Iscariot.
27 And after the morsel, Satan {Satanas, Hostile Adversary} then entered into him. Jesus {Iesous, Authoritative Master} therefore said to him, “What you are doing, do quickly.”
28 Yet none of those reclining {anakeimenon: dining guests} understood for what reason He {Iesous, Speaking Lord} said this to him.
29 For some were thinking, because Judas held the moneybag {glossokomon: Common Purse}, that Jesus {Iesous, Directing Teacher} was telling him to buy the things needed for the feast, or to give something to the poor.
30 Therefore, after taking the morsel {psomion: shared portion}, he went out at once {euthys: at once}; and it was night.
31 After stepping outside, Jesus {Iesous, Declaring Glory} says, “Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God {Theos, Glory Received} has been glorified in Him.”
32 If God {Theos, Reciprocal Glorifier} has been glorified in Him, He will likewise glorify Him within His own being, and He will glorify Him immediately {euthys: Without Delay}.
33 Little children {teknia: affectionate address}, I {Iesous, Tender Guide} am with you a little while longer. You will seek Me, and as I said to the Jews, “Where I am going, you are not able to come,” I say to you now.
34 A new commandment {entole: binding directive} I bestow on you: that you love one another. I {Iesous, New Law Giver} have loved you in this way; you also are to love one another.
35 By this all will know that you are My {Iesous, Covenant Teacher} disciples {mathetai: committed learners}, if you have love among yourselves.
36 Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord {Kyrios, Revered Master}, where are You going?” Jesus {Iesous, Departing Savior} answered, “Where I am going, You are not able to follow Me now, but you will follow afterward.”
37 Peter said to Him {Iesous, Foreknowing Lord}, “Lord, why can I not follow {akolouthesai: accompany closely} You at this moment? I will lay down my soul for Your sake.”
38 Jesus {Iesous, Foreknowing Teacher} answered, “Will you lay down your life {psyche: your whole self} for Me? Truly, truly, I say to you, the rooster will not crow until you deny Me three times.”
