Exegesis

The sentence begins with the open-ended petition clause ho ti an aitēsēte {ὅ τι ἂν αἰτήσητε | hó ti án aitḗsēte} ‘whatever you might ask’. The combination of the indefinite elements with ἄν keeps the request unrestricted while still contingent.

The final hina-clause, hina doxasthē ho patēr en tō huiō {ἵνα δοξασθῇ ὁ πατὴρ ἐν τῷ υἱῷ | hína doxasthḗ ho patḗr en tôi huīṓ}, states the purpose of the whole promise: the Father is to receive glory in the Son. The passive voice keeps the Father as the one honored, while en tō huiō locates that glorification in the Son as the visible setting of divine revelation.
