Exegesis

The opening articular participial phrase ho echon tas entolas mou kai teron autas {ὁ ἔχων τὰς ἐντολάς μου καὶ τηρῶν αὐτάς | ho échōn tas entolás mou kai tē-rōn autás} functions as a substantive subject: possession of Jesus’ commands is immediately paired with ongoing observance, so the two participles describe one and the same disciple profile.

The next clause, ho de agapon me agapethesetai hypo tou patros mou {ὁ δὲ ἀγαπῶν με ἀγαπηθήσεται ὑπὸ τοῦ πατρός μου | ho de a-ga-pōn me a-ga-pē-thē-se-tai hy-po tou pa-tros mou}, advances the thought with de rather than sharply contrasting it: love for Jesus results in future reception of the Father’s love, and hypo with the genitive presents the Father as the active personal agent.
