Exegesis

The final clause kai en emoi ouk echei ouden {καὶ ἐν ἐμοὶ οὐκ ἔχει οὐδέν | kaí en e-moi ouk é-khei ou-dén} closes the verse with emphasis on the speaker Himself: the fronted prepositional phrase en emoi ‘in Me’ highlights the sphere in which the ruler finds nothing, and the paired negation ouk ... ouden intensifies the denial into a statement of complete absence of any leverage, foothold, or claim. English can preserve the Greek sequence either by keeping the simple coordination of kai or by slightly smoothing it to a contrastive sense, but the Greek itself presents a forceful progression from curtailed speech to imminent opposition to total defeat of the adversary’s claim.
