Exegesis

The verse opens with a fronted negated clause, oukh hymeis me exelexasthe {οὐχ ὑμεῖς με ἐξελέξασθε | oukh hyméis me exeléxasthe} ‘not you chose me’, which places the disciples and the denial of their initiative before the verb for emphasis.

The first hina {ἵνα | hína} ‘so that’ clause introduces the purpose of that choice: hymeis hypagēte kai karpón phérēte {ὑμεῖς ὑπάγητε καὶ καρπὸν φέρητε | hyméis hypágēte kaí karpón phérēte} ‘you may go and bear fruit’ ties movement to productivity, so the disciples are sent into ongoing fruit-bearing.

In contextJohn 15:16

You did not choose Me , but I chose you and appointed you, so that you may go and bear fruit, and that your fruit may remain, so that whatever you ask the Father in My name, He may give to you.
