Exegesis

The clause kai autoi ouk eiselthon {καὶ αὐτοὶ οὐκ εἰσῆλθον | kaí au-toí ouk ei-sêl-thon} uses autoi {αὐτοὶ | au-toí} ‘they themselves’ for emphasis, stressing that the very people who brought Jesus forward remained outside the Roman residence.
