1 Once Jesus {Iesous, Purposeful Lord} had spoken these things, He left with His disciples {mathetes: committed followers} and passed beyond the Kidron brook. There was a garden there, and He Himself entered it together with His disciples.
2 Now Judas, the one handing Him over, knew that location as well, because Jesus {Iesous, Faithful Teacher} often assembled there with His disciples {mathetes: committed learners}.
3 Then Judas {Ioudas: Betraying Disciple} comes there with lanterns and torches and weapons {hoplon: Armed Equipment}, after taking the cohort and officers from the chief priests and from the Pharisees.
4 Jesus {Iesous, Foreknowing Lord}, therefore, knowing {eidos: settled awareness} everything that was coming upon Him, went out and said to them, “Whom are you seeking?”
5 They answered Him, “Jesus the Nazarene.” Jesus {Iesous, Self-Revealing Lord} says to them, “I am.” And Judas, the one betraying {paradidous: handing over} Him, was also standing with them.
6 When therefore He {Iesous, Majestic Self-Revealer} said to them, “I am,” they moved back and fell onto the ground {chamai: Ground-Level Impact}.
7 Then He put the question to them again, “Whom are you in search of?” They replied, “Jesus {Iesous, Sought One} the Nazarene {Nazoraion, Hometown Title}.”
8 Jesus {Iesous, Self-Revealing Lord} answered, “I told you that I am. If, therefore, you are seeking Me, then allow these {toutous: the others} to depart.”
9 This came about so that the statement He {Iesous, Faithful Promise Keeper} had made would be brought to completion: “From the ones You {Theos, Loving Giver} have given Me, I did not lose even one.”
10 So Simon Peter {Petros: Leading Disciple}, having a sword, drew it and struck the slave of the high priest, and cut off his right ear; and the slave’s name was Malchus {Malchos: Named Victim}.
11 So Jesus {Iesous, Obedient Son} said to Peter, “Set the sword back in the sheath. The cup the Father {pater, Sovereign Giver} has given to Me—would I not drink it?”
12 So the cohort, the commander, and the officers attached to the Jews arrested Jesus {Iesous, Willing Sufferer} and bound {edesan: with restraints} Him.
13 They escorted Him {Iesous, Under Arrest} first to Annas {Hannas, Initial Stop}, because he was Caiaphas’s father-in-law, who was high priest that year.
14 Now Caiaphas {Kaiaphas: High Priest} was the one who had given counsel to the Jews that one man dying would be to the advantage {sympherei: Practical Gain} of the people.
15 Simon Peter was following close behind Jesus {Iesous, Trusted Master}, and another disciple was following as well. That disciple was known to the high priest {archiereus: Chief Priest}, and he went in with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest.
16 But Peter was standing outside at the doorway. Then the other disciple, who was known to the high priest {archiereus: temple chief}, went out and spoke to the doorkeeper {thyroros: entrance guard}, and brought Peter in.
17 Then the servant girl, the gatekeeper, said to Peter {Petros: Leading Disciple}, “You are not among this man’s disciples {mathetes: committed learners} either, are you?” He responded, “I am not.”
18 Meanwhile, the servants and the attendants were standing by a charcoal fire {anthrakian: bed of coals} they had made because it was cold, and they were warming themselves. Peter was also with them, standing and warming himself {thermainomenos: seeking warmth}.
19 Then the high priest {archiereus: chief priestly official} put questions to Jesus {Iesous, Steadfast Witness} about His disciples and about His teaching.
20 Jesus {Iesous, Faithful Witness} answered him, “I have spoken publicly before the world {kosmos: public sphere}. I have always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all the Jews gather, and I said nothing in secret.”
21 Why are you asking Me {Iesous, Faithful Witness}? Ask those who have heard {akekootas: firsthand hearers} what I spoke to them; see, these know what I said.
22 Once Jesus {Iesous, Suffering Messiah} had said these things, one of the officers standing nearby dealt Him a slap, saying, “Is that the proper way to answer the high priest {archiereus: Priestly Leader}?”
23 Jesus {Iesous, Righteous Answerer} answered him, “If I spoke wrongly {kakos: unjustly}, bear witness concerning the offense; but if I spoke well, why do you strike Me?”
24 So Annas sent Him {Iesous, Bound Messiah} bound to Caiaphas {Kaiphas: official high priest}, the high priest.
25 Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. So they said to him, “You are not also among His {Iesous, Interrogated Master} disciples, are you?” He denied {arneomai: firm repudiation} it and said, “I am not.”
26 One of the high priest's servants, a relative {syngenes: close kin} of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, says, “Did I not see you with Him {Iesous, Arrested Lord} in the garden?”
27 So Peter {Petros: Identified Denier} denied once more, and at once a rooster {alektor: Fulfillment Marker} crowed.
28 After that, they brought Jesus {Iesous, Silent Sufferer} from Caiaphas to the praetorium; it was still early. They themselves did not go inside the praetorium, so that they would not be defiled, but might eat the Passover {pascha: covenant feast}.
29 Therefore Pilate {Pilatos: Roman governor} stepped outside to them and said, “What accusation {kategoria: legal claim} are you making against this man?”
30 They made this reply to him: “If this man were not engaged in wrongdoing {kakon: serious wrongdoing}, we would not have surrendered {paredokamen: official transfer} him to you.”
31 Then Pilate {Pilatos: Roman Prefect} said to them, “Take Him {Iesous, Accused One} yourselves and pass judgment on Him by your law.” The Jews replied to him, “It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death.”
32 This was so that the declaration of Jesus {Iesous, Prophetic Speaker} would be brought to completion, the declaration He had made, showing what kind of death He was about to die {thanatos: physical death}.
33 So Pilate went back into the headquarters {praitorion: Roman Governor's Residence} and called out to Jesus {Iesous, Royal Identity}, and said to Him, “Are You then the King of the Jews?”
34 Jesus {Iesous, Discerning Lord} answered, “Are you saying this from yourself, or did others {alloi: outside voices} speak to you about Me?”
35 Pilate answered, “I am not a Jew {Ioudaios: Judean Identity}, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests {archiereis: Temple Leaders} delivered you to me. What have you done?”
36 Jesus {Iesous, Heavenly King} answered, “My kingdom is not derived from this world. If My kingdom were derived from this world, My servants {hyperetai: devoted attendants} would have fought so that I would not be handed over to the Jews. But now My kingdom is not from here.”
37 Therefore Pilate said to Him, “So, You are a king?” Jesus {Iesous, Witness to Truth} answered, “You say that I am a king. For this reason I have been born, and for this reason I have come into the world {kosmos: created human order}, to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.”
38 Pilate {Pilatos: Roman governor} said to Him {Iesous, Innocent King}, “What is truth?” And having said this, he went out again to the Jews and said to them, “I find no charge in Him.”
39 But there is a custom {synetheia: established tradition} with you, that I should release one for you at the Passover. Do you wish, then, that I release for you the King of the Jews {Ioudaiōn: Judean people}?
40 Therefore they cried out {ekraugasan: shouted loudly} again, saying, “Not this one, but Barabbas {Barabbas: chosen prisoner}!” Now Barabbas was a robber.
