John 19:4ExegesisTAB

John 19 : 4 Judgment | Innocence | Purpose
4. Linguistic Exegesis
The verse opens with kai {καὶ | kaí} ‘and’ linking the narrative to the preceding scene. The verb exêlthen {ἐξῆλθεν | exêl-then} ‘he went out’ combined with palin {πάλιν | pá-lin} ‘again’ and exo {ἔξω | éx-ō} ‘outside’ underscores Pilate’s repeated movement back into the public area. Ho Pilatos {ὁ Πιλᾶτος | ho Pi-lâ-tos} ‘the Pilate’ serves as the subject of the historical present legei {λέγει | lé-gei} ‘he says,’ which introduces direct speech. Within Pilate’s address, Í-de {Ἴδε | Í-de} ‘behold’ draws attention, followed by á-gō {ἄγω | á-gō} ‘I bring’ with hu-mîn {ὑμῖν | hu-mîn} ‘to you’ and au-tón {αὐτὸν | au-tón} ‘him,’ forming a transitive presentation. The second exo reinforces the spatial emphasis before the purpose clause marked by hí-na {ἵνα | hí-na} ‘so that’ and gnô-te {γνῶτε | gnô-te} ‘you may know.’ The conjunction hó-ti {ὅτι | hó-ti} ‘that’ signals the content clause where ou-de-mí-an ai-tí-an {οὐδεμίαν αἰτίαν | ou-de-mí-an ai-tí-an} ‘no charge’ functions as the emphatic object of heu-rís-kō {εὑρίσκω | heu-rís-kō} ‘I find.’ Finally, en au-tôi {ἐν αὐτῷ | en au-tôi} ‘in him’ specifies the locus of Pilate’s judicial appraisal.
