John 5:39ExegesisTAB

John 5 : 39 Scripture | Testimony | Life
39. Linguistic Exegesis
The verse opens with eraunate {ἐραυνᾶτε | e-raunâ-te}, which can be understood either as a present indicative “you search” or as an imperative “search.” The ambiguity allows the statement to function both as description and as exhortation. The direct object tas graphas {τὰς γραφάς | tàs gra-phás} identifies the recognized sacred writings. The conjunction hoti {ὅτι | hó-ti} introduces a causal clause explaining the readers’ motivation: hymeis dokeite {ὑμεῖς δοκεῖτε | hy-meîs do-keî-te} “you yourselves think,” with explicit pronoun hymeis for emphasis on their subjective assessment. Within this clause, the prepositional phrase en autais {ἐν αὐταῖς | en au-taîs} locates the perceived source of benefit “in them,” while the infinitival phrase zoen aionion echein {ζωὴν αἰώνιον ἔχειν | zō-ḗn ai-ṓ-ni-on é-khein} functions as the content of their thinking, “that you have eternal life.” The second main clause is coordinated with kai {καὶ | kai}, shifting the focus: ekeinai eisin hai martyrousai {ἐκεῖναι εἰσίν αἱ μαρτυροῦσαι | e-keî-nai ei-sín haí mar-tu-roû-sai} is a copular construction in which the demonstrative ekeinai is identified with the articular participle phrase “the ones bearing witness.” The participle martyrousai, feminine plural, grammatically ties back to graphas as its implied antecedent. The prepositional phrase peri emou {περὶ ἐμοῦ | pe-rí e-moû} specifies the content of this testimony as being “about Me,” placing the speaker, Jesus, at the center of the scriptural witness. In translation, the two coordinated clauses are rendered as balanced sentences, preserving the causal relationship introduced by hoti and the contrast between where the audience locates life (in the writings) and where the writings themselves point (to Christ).
