1 After these things there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus {Iesous, Faithful Son} went up to Jerusalem {Hierosolyma: holy city}.
2 Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate {probatike: sheep-gate area} a pool called Bethesda, having five porticoes {stoas: covered colonnades}.
3 In these {tautais: surrounding porticoes}, a multitude of those who were sick {asthenounton: chronically ill} lay, blind, lame, and withered.
4 (Textual note: Some later manuscripts add; absent from many early witnesses:) For at a certain season, an angel {angelos: heavenly messenger} would go down into the pool and stir up the water; then the first one who stepped in after the stirring of the water was made whole, whatever kind of disease {nosos: lingering illness} he was being held by.
5 Now there was a certain man {anthropos: individual person} there who had been in his illness {astheneia: bodily weakness} for thirty-eight years.
6 When Jesus {Iesous, Discerning Healer} saw him lying there, and knew that he had already been there a long time {chronon: extended duration}, He said to him, “Do you wish to become healthy?”
7 The sick man answered Him {Iesous, Approaching Healer}, “Sir, I do not have a man so that, whenever the water {hydor: disturbed for cure} is stirred, he might put me into the pool; but while I am coming, another steps down before me.”
8 Jesus {Iesous, Authoritative Healer} said to him, “Rise {egeire: stand up now}, take up your bed, and walk.”
9 And immediately {eutheos: without any delay} the man became healthy, and he took up his mat, and he was walking. Now it was the Sabbath {sabbaton: seventh-day rest} on that day.
10 Therefore the Jews {Ioudaioi: religious authorities} were saying to the one who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath {Sabbaton: sacred rest day}, and it is not lawful for you to take up your mat.”
11 But he answered them, “The One who made me well {hygie: fully cured} said to me, ‘Take up your bed {krabbaton: simple sleeping mat} and walk.’”
12 So they asked him, “Who is the man {anthropos: human individual} who said to you, ‘Take up and walk {peripatei: move about freely}’?”
13 But the one who had been healed did not know who it was, for Jesus {Iesous, Unseen Healer} had slipped away, since there was a crowd {ochlos: gathering of many} in that place.
14 After these things Jesus {Iesous, Merciful Healer} found him in the temple and said to him, “Behold, you have become healthy {hugiēs: restored to wholeness}; sin no longer, so that something worse does not happen to you.”
15 The man departed and reported to the Jews that Jesus {Iesous, Compassionate Healer} is the One who had made him whole {hygies: restored to sound health}.
16 And because of this the Jews were persecuting Jesus {Iesous, Sabbath Healer}, because He was doing these things on the Sabbath {sabbaton: covenant rest day}.
17 But He {Iesous, Co-Worker with Father} answered them, “My Father {pater: Ever Working Source} is working until now, and I am working.”
18 Therefore, because of this, the Jews were seeking all the more to kill Him, because He was not only breaking the Sabbath {sabbaton: day of rest}, but He was also calling God {Theos, Claimed Father} His own Father, making Himself equal with God.
19 Therefore Jesus {Iesous, Divine Son} answered and said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son {huios: heir and representative} is not able to do anything from Himself, unless He sees the Father {pater: authoritative source} doing it; for whatever things that One does, these also the Son does in the same way.”
20 For the Father {pater, Loving Revealer} loves the Son {huios, Beloved Son} and makes known to Him all that He Himself does, and He will make known to Him greater works than these, so that you may marvel.
21 For just as the Father {pater, Life-Giving Source} raises the dead and makes them alive, so also the Son {huios, Life-Giving Heir} makes alive whomever He wills.
22 For the Father {Pater, Sovereign Giver} does not judge anyone, but has given all judgment to the Son {huios, Entrusted Judge},
23 In order that all may honor the Son {huios, Worthy Divine Heir} just as they honor the Father {pater, Honored Divine Source}. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.
24 Truly, truly, I {Iesous, Truthful Witness} say to you that whoever hears My word and believes Him {Theos, Sending Father} who sent Me has everlasting life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.
25 Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God {huios tou theou, Life Giver}, and those who hear will live {zesousin: receive new life}.
26 For just as the Father {Pater, Self-Existent Source} has life in Himself, so He also granted to the Son {Huios, Life-Receiving Son} to have life in Himself.
27 And He {Theos, Judge Appointing Father} gave Him authority to execute judgment, because He is the Son of Man {huios anthropou: Human yet exalted}.
28 Do not marvel {thaumazete: be astonished} at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear His {Iesous, Resurrection Caller} voice,
29 And they will come out, those who have done good {agatha: morally excellent deeds} to the resurrection of life, but those who have practiced evil {phaula: corrupt behavior} to the resurrection of judgment.
30 I {ego: emphatic speaker} am not able to do anything from Myself; just as I hear, I judge; and My judgment {krisis: judicial ruling} is just, because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.
31 If I {Iesous, Self-Witnessing Son} bear witness about myself, my testimony is not true {alethes: fully reliable}.
32 There is another who bears witness concerning Me {Iesous, Testified Son}, and I know that the testimony {martyria: confirming witness} which He bears concerning Me is true.
33 You have sent to John {Ioannes: prophetic herald}, and he has testified to the truth {aletheia: reliable reality}.
34 But I {Iesous, Saving Witness} do not receive the testimony from man; instead, I say these things so that you may be saved {sothete: delivered from judgment}.
35 That one was the lamp {lychnos: temporary witness} that was burning and shining, but you were willing for a time to rejoice in his light {phos: borrowed radiance}.
36 But I have testimony {marturian: authoritative witness} greater than John’s, for the works that the Father {Pater, Sovereign Sender} has given Me to complete—these very works that I do—testify about Me, that the Father has sent Me.
37 And the Father {Pater, Witnessing Sender} who sent Me {Iesous, Revealed Son} has Himself testified concerning Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time nor seen His form.
38 And you do not have His {Theos, Faithful Sender} word {logos: revealed message} remaining in you, because the One whom He sent, that One you do not believe.
39 Search the Scriptures {graphai: sacred writings}, because you think that in them you have eternal life; and these are the ones that testify about Me {Iesous, Revealed Fulfillment}.
40 And you are not willing to come to Me {Iesous, Life Giving Lord} so that you may have life {zoen: everlasting fellowship}.
41 I do not receive honor {doxan: public esteem} from people {anthropon: human approval}.
42 But I know you, that you do not have the love of God {Theos, Rejected Benefactor} in yourselves {heautois: in your inner life}.
43 I {Iesous, Rejected Son} have come in the name of My Father {Patēr, Authorizing Source}, and you do not receive Me; if another comes in his own name, you will receive him.
44 How are you able to believe, when you receive glory {doxa: honor and approval} from one another and do not seek the glory that is from the only God {Theos, Exclusive Source of Honor}?
45 Do not think that I {Iesous, Righteous Judge} will accuse you before the Father {Pater, Ultimate Judge}; there is one who accuses you—Moses, in whom you have placed your hope.
46 For if you believed Moses {Mousei: Covenant Lawgiver}, you would believe Me {emoi: Jesus, Scriptural Fulfillment}; for that one wrote about Me.
47 But if you do not believe his writings {grammata: scriptural records}, how will you believe My {Iesous, Superior Revealer} words?
