The main verb eidon {εἶδον | eî-don} ‘they saw’ takes two ὅτι-clauses as its objects in a coordinated structure: eidon hoti ploiarion allo ouk ēn ekei ei mē hen, kai hoti ou syneisēlthen tois mathētais autou ho Iēsous eis to ploion {εἶδον ὅτι πλοιάριον ἄλλο οὐκ ἦν ἐκεῖ εἰ μὴ ἕν, καὶ ὅτι οὐ συνεισῆλθεν τοῖς μαθηταῖς αὐτοῦ ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἰς τὸ πλοῖον | eî-don hó-ti plo-iá-ri-on ál-lo ouk ēn e-keî ei mē hen, kai hó-ti ou sy-nei-sêl-then tois ma-thē-taîs au-toû ho Iē-soûs eis to plôi-on}. The first ὅτι-clause reports the objective situation regarding the boats: no other little boat was there except one. The idiom ei mē ‘except’ marks the single exception to the negated statement.
