1 After these things Jesus {Iesous, Traveling Teacher} went across the Sea {thalassa: large inland waters} of Galilee, that is, the Sea of Tiberias.
2 And a great crowd was following Him {Iesous, Sought Healer}, because they were observing the signs {semeia: divine evidences} which He was doing upon those who were sick.
3 Jesus {Iesous, Divine Teacher} went up into the mountain, and there He was sitting with His disciples {mathetes: dedicated students}.
4 Now the Passover {pascha: festival of deliverance}, the feast of the Jews {Ioudaiōn: covenant nation}, was near.
5 Therefore Jesus {Iesous, Miracle Provider}, having lifted up His eyes and seeing that a large crowd was coming toward Him, said to Philip, “From where shall we buy loaves {artos: bread made of wheat} so that these may eat?”
6 He {Iesous, Discerning Teacher} was saying this to test {peirazōn: probe faith} him, for He Himself knew what He was about to do.
7 Philip answered Him {Iesous, Faith-Testing Teacher}, “Two hundred denarii {denarion: daily wages} worth of bread are not sufficient for them, so that each might receive a little.”
8 One of His disciples {matheton: committed learners}, Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, said to Him {Iesous, Questioned Teacher},
9 There is a boy {paidarion: young child} here who has five barley {krithinous: coarse bread} loaves and two small fish, but what are these for so many?
10 Jesus {Iesous, Abundant Provider} said, “Have the people {anthropous: gathered crowd} recline.” Now there was much grass in the place. So the men reclined, about five thousand in number.
11 Then Jesus {Iesous, Abundant Provider} took the loaves, and having given thanks, He distributed them to those who were reclining; likewise also from the fish, as much as they wished {ethelon: freely desired}.
12 When they were filled, He {Iesous, Divine Provider} said to His disciples, “Gather up the fragments {klasmata: pieces broken off} that are left over, so that nothing may be lost.”
13 So they gathered them together, and they filled twelve baskets {kophinous: sturdy containers} with fragments {klasmaton: broken pieces} from the five barley loaves, which were left over by those who had eaten.
14 Therefore the people, having seen the sign that He {Iesous, Messianic Provider} had done, were saying, “This is truly the Prophet {prophetes: promised figure} who is coming into the world.”
15 Jesus {Iesous, Refusing Earthly Kingship} therefore, having known that they were about to come and seize {harpazein: take by force} Him in order to make Him king, withdrew again into the mountain by Himself alone.
16 When evening came, His {Iesous, Faithful Teacher} disciples went down to the sea {thalassa: large body of water}.
17 And after they had entered into a boat, they were going across the sea {thalassa: large inland lake} toward Capernaum. Now it had already become dark, and Jesus {Iesous, Awaited Teacher} had not yet come to them.
18 And the sea {thalassa: large inland waters} was being stirred up {diegeiro: violently agitated} because a great wind was blowing.
19 So, when they had rowed about twenty-five or thirty stadia, they saw Jesus {Iēsous, Divine Revealer} walking upon the sea and coming near the boat, and they were afraid {ephobēthēsan: overtaken by fear}.
20 But He {Iesous, Calming Presence} says to them, “I am; do not fear {phobeisthe: be terrified}.”
21 Therefore they were willing to receive Him {Iesous, Sovereign Over Nature} into the boat {ploion: small fishing craft}, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.
22 On the next day, the crowd {ochlos: assembled people} standing on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other little boat there except one, and that Jesus {Iesous, Wonder-working Teacher} had not entered with His disciples into the boat, but that His disciples had gone away alone.
23 But small boats came from Tiberias near the place where they ate the bread after the Lord {kyrios, Gracious Provider} had given thanks {eucharisteo: offered gratitude to God}.
24 When therefore the crowd saw that Jesus {Iesous, Divine Teacher} was not there, nor His disciples {mathetai: devoted learners}, they themselves got into the small boats and went to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.
25 And when they found Him {Iesous, Sought Wonder Worker} beyond the sea {thalassa: large body of water}, they said to Him, “Rabbi {rhabbi: honored Jewish teacher}, when did You come here?”
26 Jesus {Iesous, Heart-Searching Teacher} answered them and said, “Truly, truly I say to you, you are seeking Me, not because you saw signs {semeia: miraculous indications}, but because you ate from the loaves and were satisfied.”
27 Do not work for the food that is perishing, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man {huios tou anthropou, Life-Giving Provider} will give to you; for this One God the Father {Theos pater, Divine Authenticator} has sealed.
28 Therefore they said to Him {Iesous, Guiding Teacher}, “What should we do in order that we might work the works of God {Theos, Divine Initiator}?”
29 Jesus {Iesous, Sent Messiah} answered and said to them, “This is the work of God {Theos, Author of Faith}, that you believe in Him whom He sent.”
30 Therefore they said to Him {Iesous, Questioned Miracle Giver}, “What sign {semeion: confirming miraculous proof} do You do, so that we may see and believe You? What do You perform?”
31 Our fathers ate the manna {manna: miraculous food} in the wilderness, just as it is written: ‘He {Theos, Giver of Bread} gave them bread from heaven to eat.’
32 Then Jesus {Iesous, Authoritative Speaker} said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but My Father {pater, Present Provider} gives you the true bread from heaven.”
33 For the bread of God {Theos, Source Of True Bread} is the One who comes down from heaven and gives life {zoen: spiritual vitality} to the world.
34 Therefore, they said to Him, “Sir {Kyrios, Faithful Sustainer}, give us this bread {arton: essential sustenance} always.”
35 Jesus {Iesous, Life Sustaining Lord} said to them, “I am the bread {artos: enduring nourishment} of life; the one coming to Me will certainly not hunger, and the one believing in Me will certainly never thirst.”
36 But I said to you that you have also seen Me {Iesous, Rejected Savior}, and yet you do not believe {pisteuete: active trustful response}.
37 All that the Father {Pater, Sovereign Giver} gives to Me {Iesous, Receiving Son} will come to Me, and the one coming to Me I will certainly not cast out.
38 For I {Iesous, Obedient Son} have come down from heaven, not so that I might do My own will, but the will of the One {pempsantos, Sending Father} who sent Me.
39 And this is the will {thelema: determined purpose} of Him {Theos, Preserving Father} who sent Me, that of everything that He has given Me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up on the last day.
40 For this is the will of My Father {pater, Sovereign Giver of Life}, that everyone who beholds the Son {huios, Life-Giving Messiah} and believes in Him may have everlasting life, and I Myself will raise him up on the last day.
41 Therefore the Jews {Ioudaioi: Judean religious authorities} were grumbling about Him {Iesous, Heavenly Bread Revealer}, because He said, “I am the bread that has come down from heaven.”
42 And they were saying, “Is not this Jesus {Iesous, Claimed Heaven-Sent}, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know {oidamen: deep familiarity}? How then does He say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?”
43 Jesus {Iesous, Authoritative Teacher} answered and said to them, “Do not murmur {gongyzete: quiet complaints} among one another.”
44 No one is able to come to Me {Iesous, Life-Giving Son} unless the Father {pater, Sovereign Drawer} who sent Me draws him, and I will raise him up on the last day.
45 It is written in the prophets, “And they will all be taught by God {Theos, Divine Teacher}.” Everyone who has heard from the Father {Pater, Revealing Source} and has learned comes to Me.
46 Not that anyone has seen the Father {Pater, Unseen Source}, except the one who is from God {Theos, Divine Sender}; this one has seen the Father.
47 Truly, truly, I {Iesous, Faithful Life-Giver} say to you, the one who believes has eternal life {zoen: unending fellowship}.
48 I {Iesous, Life-Giving Lord} am the bread {artos: sustaining provision} of life.
49 Your fathers {pateres: physical ancestors} ate the manna {manna: wilderness provision} in the wilderness, and they died.
50 This {Iesous, Life-Giving Bread} is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that anyone may eat from it and not die {apothane: final destruction}.
