Exegesis

The verse opens with apekrithe Iesous kai eipen autois {ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς | a-pe-krí-thē Iē-soûs kaí eî-pen au-toîs} ‘Jesus answered and said to them’, a typical Johannine introduction that marks a formal, authoritative response.

The causal clause introduced by hoti {ὅτι | hó-ti} in hoti oida pothen elthon kai pou hypago {ὅτι οἶδα πόθεν ἦλθον καὶ ποῦ ὑπάγω | hó-ti oî-da pó-then ēl-thon kaí poû hy-pá-gō} ‘because I know where I came from and where I am going’ grounds the truth of the testimony in Jesus’ self-knowledge of origin and destiny.

In contextJohn 8:14

Jesus answered and said to them, “Even if I bear witness concerning Myself, My testimony is true , because I know where I came from and where I am going; but you do not know where I come from or where I am going.”
