1 But Jesus {Iesous, Faithful Teacher} went to the Mount of Olives {Elaiōn: olive-tree hillside}.
2 But at early dawn, He {Iesous, Temple Teacher} came again into the temple, and all the people were coming, and, having sat down, He was teaching them {autous: gathered crowd}.
3 Then the scribes and the Pharisees brought to Him {Iesous, Righteous Judge} a woman who had been caught in adultery, and after placing her in the midst {meso: center of the group},
4 They say to Him {Iesous, Tested Teacher}, testing {peirazontes: hostilely challenging}, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery.”
5 Now in the Law, Moses {Moses: Torah mediator} commanded us that such ones {toiautas: of this kind} must be stoned. So then, what do you say?
6 But this they were saying, testing Him, so that they might have something with which to accuse Him. But Jesus {Iesous, Calm Judge}, having stooped down, was writing with His finger on the ground, not paying attention {prospoiousmenos: outwardly ignoring} to them.
7 As they persisted in asking Him {Iesous, Righteous Judge}, He straightened up and said to them, “The one among you who is without sin {anamartetos: never having sinned}, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.”
8 And again, having stooped down, He {Iesous, Humble Teacher} was writing on the ground {ge: earth surface}.
9 But when they had heard, and being convicted by the conscience {syneidesis: inner moral witness}, they began to go out one by one, starting from the elders, and Jesus {Iesous, Righteous Judge} was left alone, and the woman was standing in the midst.
10 But Jesus {Iesous, Merciful Judge}, having stood up and seeing no one except the woman, said to her, “Where are they, your accusers {kategoroi: formal accusers}? Has no one condemned you?”
11 She said, “No one, Lord.” Then Jesus {Iesous, Merciful Teacher} said, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and stop sinning any more {hamartane: act wrongly}.”
12 Therefore Jesus {Iesous, Radiant World Light} spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world; the one who follows Me will certainly not walk in darkness {skotia: spiritual blindness}, but will have the light of life.”
13 Therefore the Pharisees said to Him {Iesous, Challenged Teacher}, “You are testifying about Yourself; Your testimony is not true {alethes: trustworthy, genuine}.”
14 Jesus {Iesous, Divine Witness} answered and said to them, “Even if I bear witness concerning Myself, My testimony is true {alethes: genuinely reliable}, because I know where I came from and where I am going; but you do not know where I come from or where I am going.”
15 You judge according to the flesh {sarx: human standards}; I {ego, Gracious Judge} do not judge anyone.
16 And even if I {Iesous, Righteous Judge} judge, My judgment is true, because I am not alone, but I and the Father {Pater, Co-Judge With Son} who sent Me.
17 And in your Law {nomos: Moses teaching} it has been written that the testimony {martyria: witness statement} of two people is true.
18 I am the one bearing witness about Myself, and the Father {Patēr, Faithful Co-Witness} who sent {pempsas: authoritative commissioning} Me also bears witness about Me.
19 Then they said to Him, “Where is your Father?” Jesus {Iesous, Unique Son} answered, “You neither know Me nor My Father {pater, Heavenly Source}; if you had known Me, you would have known My Father also.”
20 He {Iesous, Sovereign Teacher} spoke these words in the treasury {gazophulakion: offering chamber} while teaching in the temple, and no one seized Him because His hour had not yet come.
21 Therefore He {Iesous, Solemn Judge} said to them again, “I am going away, and you will seek Me, and you will die in your sin {hamartia: moral guilt}. Where I am going, you are not able to come.”
22 So the Jews were saying, “Surely He {Iesous, Departing Lord} will not kill Himself, will He, since He says, ‘Where I am going {hypago: depart beyond reach}, you are not able to come’?”
23 And He {Iesous, Heavenly Origin Revealer} was saying to them, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world {kosmos: present fallen order}; I am not of this world.”
24 I {ego: Self-Revealing One} said therefore to you that you will die {apothnesko: decisive judgment} in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am, you will die in your sins.
25 So they were saying to Him {Iesous, Questioned Messiah}, “Who are You?” Jesus said to them, “What I have been telling you from the beginning {arche: initial teaching}.”
26 I have many things to say and to judge concerning you, but He {Theos, Faithful Sender} who sent Me is true, and I speak to the world {kosmos: human realm} those things which I heard from Him.
27 They did not understand {egnōsan: failed to grasp} that He {Iesous, Misunderstood Son} was speaking to them about the Father.
28 Then Jesus {Iesous, Self-Revealing Son} said, “When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am, and I do nothing from Myself; but just as the Father {pater, Authoritative Teacher} taught Me, I speak these things.”
29 And He {Theos, Ever-Present Father} who sent {pempo: authoritative commissioning} Me is with Me; He has not left Me alone, because I {Iesous, Perfectly Obedient Son} always do the things that are pleasing {aresta: wholly acceptable} to Him.
30 As He {Iesous, Faith Stirring Speaker} was speaking these things, many believed in Him {pisteuo: committed trust}.
31 So Jesus {Iesous, Authoritative Teacher} was saying to the Jews who had believed in Him, “If you continue in My word {logos: authoritative teaching}, you are My genuine disciples.”
32 And you will know the truth {aletheia: reliable reality}, and the truth will liberate you {eleutherosei: release from bondage}.
33 They answered Him {Iesous, Questioned Teacher}, “We are the offspring {sperma: physical covenant descendants} of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that You say, ‘You will become free’?”
34 Jesus {Iesous, Authoritative Truth-Speaker} answered them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, everyone who is engaged in sin {hamartia: defiant wrongdoing} is a slave of sin.”
35 But the slave {doulos: bonded servant} does not remain in the house forever {aiona: unending time}; the son remains forever.
36 Therefore, if the Son {huios, Liberator} frees you, you will be truly {ontos: actually real} free.
37 I {Iesous, Discerning Heart Knower} know that you are Abraham’s seed, but you seek to kill Me because My word {logos: authoritative message} does not find room in you.
38 I speak what I have seen with the Father {Patēr, Heavenly Source}, and you therefore do what you have heard from your father {patēr: formative influence}.
39 They answered and said to Him, “Our father is Abraham.” Jesus {Iesous, Heart Revealing Teacher} said to them, “If you were children of Abraham, you would be doing the works {erga: faithful actions} of Abraham.”
40 But now you seek to kill me, a man who has spoken to you the truth which I heard from God {Theos, Sender of Revelation}; Abraham {Abraam: Covenant Model} did not do this.
41 You are doing the works of your father. They said to Him, “We were not born from immorality {porneia: sexual sin accusation}; we have one Father, God {Theos, Covenant Father}.”
42 Jesus {Iesous, Sent Son} said to them, “If God {Theos, Discerning Father} were your Father, you would love Me, for I came out from God and I am here; for I have not even come from Myself, but He sent Me.”
43 Why do you not understand My {Iesous, Revealing Truth} speech? Because you are not able to hear My word {logos: authoritative message}.
44 You come from your father, the devil {diabolos: slandering enemy}, and you are bent on carrying out your father’s desires. That one was a murderer from the beginning and has not remained in the truth {aletheia: reliable reality}, because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks the lie, he speaks from what is his own, because he is a liar and the father of it.
45 But because I {Iesous, Truth Revealing Lord} speak the truth {aletheian: dependable reality}, you do not believe Me.
46 Which one of you convicts Me {Iesous, Sinless Witness} of sin {hamartias: moral wrongdoing}? If I speak the truth, why do you not believe Me?
47 The one who is from God {Theos, Divine Origin} hears the words {rhemata: spoken sayings} of God. For this reason, you do not hear, because you are not from God.
48 The Jews answered and said to Him {Iesous, Rejected Messiah}, “Are we not right in saying that You are a Samaritan and have a demon {daimonion: hostile spirit}?”
49 Jesus {Iesous, Falsely Accused One} answered, “I do not have a demon {daimonion: hostile spirit}, but I honor my Father, and you dishonor Me.”
50 But I {Iesous, Self-Giving Son} do not seek My own glory {doxa: rightful honor}; there is One who seeks and judges.
