Exegesis

The verse opens with the articular participial expression ho on ek tou theou {ὁ ὢν ἐκ τοῦ θεοῦ | ho ôn ek tou theou} ‘the one who is from God’, where the participle functions substantivally to describe a person characterized by origin in God.
