Joshua 13 : 5 Territory | Direction | Boundary
5. Linguistic Exegesis
The Hebrew construct lists geographic boundaries with coordinated noun phrases and directional prepositional phrases. The initial vehaaretz {וְהָאָ֣רֶץ | wə-hā-ʼā-reṣ} ‘and the land’ adds a new territorial unit. The construct haggibli vekol-halebanon {הַגִּבְלִי וְכָל־הַלְּבָנוֹן | ha-gib-lî wə-kol-hā-lə-ba-nōn} links two regions in a single phrase. The compound mizrach hashemesh {מִזְרַח הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ | miz-raḥ ha-šā-meš} literally “east of the sun” functions as a directional heading. The sequence mibbaal gad tachat har-khermon {מִבַּעַל גָּד תַּ֖חַת הַר־חֶרְמ֑וֹן} maintains Hebrew origin-to-location order (“from Baal Gad below Mount Hermon”). The prepositional ad governs the infinitive construct levo chamat {עַד לְב֥וֹא חֲמָֽת} to indicate the terminal boundary as “the entrance of Hamath.” This arrangement preserves Hebrew syntax while rendering it into coherent English boundary description.
