Judges 19:18ExegesisTAB

Judges 19 : 18 Journey | Hospitality | Covenant
18. Linguistic Exegesis
The verse opens with vayomer {וַיֹּאמֶר | wayyōmer} ‘and he said,’ a vav-consecutive Qal imperfect introducing direct address. The phrase mibbeit-lechem Yəhūdāh {מִבֵּית־לֶחֶם יְהוּדָה | mibēyt-ləḥem Yəhūdāh} ‘from Bethlehem in Judah’ marks the origin in a source-path-goal sequence, continued by ’ad-yarkəṯê har-’Ep̄rāyim {עַד־יַרְכְּתֵי הַר־אֶפְרַיִם | ’ad-yarkəṯê har-’Ep̄rāyim} ‘to the remotest parts of the hill country of Ephraim.’ The anaphoric misham {מִשָּׁם | mi-šām} ‘from there’ resumes the narrative, and the vav-consecutive wā’élēḳ {וָאֵלֵךְ | wā’élēḳ} ‘and I went’ continues the perfective action. The repetition of ’ad-bēyt-leḥem Yəhūdāh underscores the intended return, while wə’ēṯ-bēyt Yəhōwāh {וְאֶת־בֵּית יְהוָה | wə’ēṯ-bēyt Yəhōwāh} ‘and to the house of Yahweh’ uses the direct object marker for focus. The participle hōlēḳ ’ănî {הֹלֵךְ אֲנִי | hōlēḳ ’ănî} ‘I am going’ indicates ongoing movement, and the existential clause wə’ēn ’îš mə’āsēp̄ ’ōṯî {וְאֵין אִישׁ מְאַסֵּף אוֹתִי | wə’ēn ’îš mə’āsēp̄ ’ōṯî} ‘and there is no one gathering me’ employs a Piel participle to express denial of hospitality. The locative habbāytāh ‘homeward’ intensifies the plea for lodging. This structure highlights the speaker’s urgency and the social obligation of hospitality in ancient Israel.
