Leviticus 13:28ExegesisTAB

Leviticus 13 : 28 Diagnosis | Purity | Ritual
28. Linguistic Exegesis
The verse opens with the conjunctive conditional in vav im {וְאִם־תַּחְתֶּיהָ֩ | və-ʾim-taḥ-tê-hā} ‘and if it is under it’, introducing the legal protasis. The verb ta'amod {תַעֲמֹד | ta-ʿa-mōḏ} ‘stands’ in the Qal imperfect denotes ongoing presence. The noun habaheret {הַבַּהֶרֶת | ha-bā-hê-ret} ‘the bright spot’ serves as subject, and the negative perfect lo-pashta {לֹא־פָשְׂתָ֤ה | lō-pā-śə-ṯāh} ‘has not spread’, modified by baor {בָעוֹר֙ | bā-ʿôr} ‘in the skin’, clarifies absence of progression. The coordination vehi keha {וְהִ֣וא כֵהָ֔ה | wə-hîʾ kê-hāh} ‘and it is dull’ contrasts active lesions. The construct seet hamikveh {שְׂאֵת הַמִּכְוָ֖ה | śə-ʾēt ham-mik-wâ(h)} ‘swelling of the burn’ links symptom to cause. The apodosis begins with the vav consecutive in vetiharo hakohen {וְטִֽהֲרוֹ הַכֹּהֵן | wə-ṭi-hăr-ō ha-kō-hēn} ‘and he pronounces him clean’, and the causal kitsarevet hamikveh {כִּי־צָרֶבֶת הַמִּכְוָ֖ה | kî-ṣā-re-vet ham-mik-wâ(h)} ‘for it is a scar of the burn’ provides the justification. This protasis–apodosis pattern and use of vav consecutive and construct chains underscore the diagnostic and ritual resolution process.
