11. Linguistic Exegesis
The verse presents three prohibitions, each marked by the negative particle lo {לֹא | lō} ‘not’ followed by a verb tignōwū {תִּגְנֹבוּ | tiḡ-nō-wū} ‘you shall steal’, tekhaḥaššû {תְכַחֲשׁוּ | tə-khaḥ-aš-šû} ‘you shall deny falsely’, and tešaqqerû {תְשַׁקְּרוּ | tə-šaqq-er-ū} ‘you shall lie’. The conjunction wə-lō {וְלֹא | wə-lō} ‘and not’ links the prohibitions in series. The noun ʾîš {אִישׁ | ʾîš} ‘man’ serves as the subject of the relational prepositional phrase ba-ʿă-mî-ṯô {בַּעֲמִיתוֹ | ba-ʿă-mî-ṯô} ‘against his associate’, framing the ethical injunctions within social relationships.
