Exegesis

What they were saying is expressed in two parallel hoti-clauses: hoti Beelzeboul echei {ὅτι Βεελζεβοὺλ ἔχει | hóti Beelzeboúl ékhei} and hoti en tō archonti tōn daimoniōn ekballei ta daimonia {ὅτι ἐν τῷ ἄρχοντι τῶν δαιμονίων ἐκβάλλει τὰ δαιμόνια | hóti en tō árchonti tōn daimoníōn ekbállei tá daimónia}. The first clause uses echei with Beelzeboul as its object to convey the idea “He has Beelzeboul,” idiomatically understood as demon possession. The second clause uses the preposition en plus dative, en tō archonti, in an instrumental sense, “by the ruler of the demons,” followed by ekballei with a double object structure: the implied agent (He) and the explicit object ta daimonia.
