Matthew 13:6ExegesisTAB

Matthew 13 : 6 Heat | Vulnerability | Foundations
6. Linguistic Exegesis
The verse begins with the genitive absolute construction anateilantos {ἀνατείλαντος | a-na-teí-lan-tos} “having risen” with the noun heliou {ἡλίου | hē-lí-ou} “sun” and the postpositive conjunction de setting a temporal backdrop. The sequential aorist passive verbs ekaumatisthe {ἐκαυματίσθη | e-kau-ma-tís-thē} “was scorched” and exeranthe {ἐξηράνθη | ex-e-rán-thē} “was withered” narrate the effects on the subject of the parable. The coordinating conjunction kai {καὶ | kaí} links these two results. The causal clause dia to me echein rhizan {διὰ τὸ μὴ ἔχειν ῥίζαν | di-á to mē é-khein rhí-zan} “because of not having root” employs the articular infinitive with the neuter article to to express cause. This Greek progression from temporal setting through result to explicit cause is mirrored in English by using a temporal phrase (“when/as soon as”), passive verb forms for the aorists, and “because” to introduce the articular infinitive clause.
