Numbers 18:6ExegesisTAB

Numbers 18 : 6 Selection | Gift | Service
6. Linguistic Exegesis
The clause opens with the emphatic pronoun va’ani {וַאֲנִ֗י | wa-ʾă-nî} and particle hinneh {הִנֵּ֤ה | hin-nê} “behold,” a fronting device that highlights divine initiative. The perfect verb laqaḥti {לָקַ֙חְתִּי֙ | lā-qaḥ-tî} indicates completed divine action. The direct object marker ’et {אֶת־ | ’et} marks the Levites as the focus of God’s selection, reinforced by mitokh bᵉnei Yisrael {מִתּוֹךְ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל | mi-tôḵ bə-nê Yiś-rā-’êl} “from among the sons of Israel.” The purpose clause employs the infinitive la’avod {לַעֲבֹד | la-’ă-ḇōḏ} “to serve” with ’et ’ăvodat ’ōhel mō’ēd {אֶת־עֲבֹדַת אֹהֶל מוֹעֵד | ’et ’ă-ḇō-ḏat ’ō-hel mō-’êd} “the service of the tent of meeting” to define the Levites’ cultic function. Hebrew word order accentuates God’s agency and the Levites’ consecrated role.
